Royal Ascot 1.15 Buckingham Palace Handicap (7f)

We kick-off the Royal meeting with a race which they have brought back for this year only. It is a bit different from most handicaps as there isn’t a clear trend on the likely winners. Ascot form and drawn widest is usually the best way to play it, so we will have two in this, drawn either side.

The first is EBURY who has won over a mile at the track and likes to sit off the pace. He probably needed the run at Newmarket and should be coming late at a big price. The other is GREENSIDE who was last seen placing over course and distance and is drawn well on the far side. Henry Candy has trained a few winners already since the restart and he should be good to go.

The fav Daarik will have plenty to come but we would rather have two bets at decent odds rather than a short price in a handicap that every horse will need a bit of luck in.

Bet365 are paying 5 places (1/4 odds) on this race, take advantage of it here.

Royal Ascot 2.25 Ribblesdale Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2) (1m3f211y)

This year’s Ribblesdale could be a key Oaks trial with plenty of these likely to line-up in the Epsom Classic. It was hard not be taken by FRANKLY DARLING at Newcastle, coasting clear in the latter stages. John Gosden knows what it takes to win this race (won 2 of the last 3 renewals). She clearly has more to come and should improve past these and go on to bigger things.

Most of the rest have all had cracks in pattern company already with varying success. Ballydoyle’s main hope Passion was a tad unlucky in a Group 2 at Doncaster last season and could go well along with the stablemate to our selection Miss Yoda, who should be battling for a place as well.

Royal Ascot 3.00 King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) (1m3f211y)

Aidan O’Brien took this last year with Japan who went on to win by four and a half widening lengths under Ryan Moore. The pair team up again with race favourite MOGUL and I can’t see past him. He has looked thoroughly progressive in four runs to date, winning his maiden at the Curragh before improving to win a Group 2 at Leopardstown. He wasn’t suited by the Futurity Trophy being switched to Newcastle and run on an artificial surface but he was far from disgraced, staying on for fourth. Kameko won the race and he has progressed to win the Guineas so the form has been given a nice boost since. The yard have always thought highly of him and he should progress into a smart young stayer this season. The step up to a mile and a half for the first time is sure to suit and he should prove too strong.

Stablemate Arthur’s Kingdom may well chase him home to give O’Brien a 1-2. He is by Camelot and was quick to step up to Group 1 company finishing third in the Criterium at Saint-Cloud on final start and can also do better as his stamina is drawn out. Mohican Heights is unbeaten in two starts to date so is another to consider for David Simcock. This is a big step up on what we’ve seen so far though.

Royal Ascot 3.35 King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) (5f)

A fairly small field again for the King’s Stand Stakes and BATTAASH is the one that really stands-out above the rest. He is rated 10lb better than everything else in the race and it will take a lot to beat him. He ran a cracker last year when getting beaten by Blue Point after only having one horse in-front to take him into the race. He did have a blip in the l’Abbaye last season but he goes well fresh (won first time out last 3 years) and I’d be surprised if he gets beat.

Glass Slippers won the l’Abbaye and could go well if in the same vein of form with stablemate to our pick Equilateral likely to be in the money as well.

Royal Ascot 4.10 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2) (1m straight course)

Move Swiftly won this last year for William Haggas and he has another good chance with the unbeaten Miss O Connor. She is likely to be popular given her profile but she did all her winning with cut in the ground and the ground at the time of writing is Good with only showers in the forecast. It’s highly unlikely she’ll get her conditions so I’m opposing.

NAZEEF really impressed me on return, quickening up smartly off a good pace to win well at the line. She beat the right horse in Billesdon Brook and is clearly improving fast. This represents another step up but she looks exciting and I want to keep her on side. The only issue really is her price as the bookies have taken no chances. It wouldn’t surprise me if she eased a bit but she is definitely my main play in the race. The straight mile should suit her too as it’s likely she will just track the pace through before producing that turn of foot. The most likely winner if getting the gaps.

Given the nature of the race I’ve had an each way saver too as I think QUEEN POWER will outrun her price-tag. This Shamardal filly chased home the progressive Terebellum on return shaping well and if she builds on that she can take a hand in the finish. Great value at around 7/1 so make sure you include her too (also if she does win she qualifies for the ITV 4/1 offer). Others to consider are Jubiloso who clearly has the ability needed to win this but has a bit to prove on her return. Sandown winner Lavender’s Blue also shaped well on final start at Newmarket and won’t be far away.

Royal Ascot 4.40 Ascot Stakes (Class 2 Handicap) (2m3f210y)

With Irish horses only allowed to travel over for Group races the Willie Mullins brigade have to stay at home. This would have been great for the English trainers who have seen Ireland win this plenty over the years. Nicky Henderson is one of the best around and is teaming up with Ryan Moore who has done well over the years in this race. VERDANA BLUE could have a lot in hand with her hurdle form taken into account, she is rated 160 over hurdles and has won at the top level. She gets to race off 100 in this and will take all the beating.

One at a bigger price BLUE LAUREATE is good value after finishing a head second behind Moon King who is half the price at the time of writing and carries a penalty. Ian William’s runners appear to need the run and he can reverse the form from last week and run a big race.
