Royal Ascot 1.15 Silver Royal Hunt Cup Handicap (A Consolation Race For The Royal Hunt Cup) (1m)
Just like yesterday it’s a fiercely competitive handicap to start and we’ve taken two against the field at prices in a hope to turn some profit in the very first race of the day. BRIAN EPSTEIN takes his chance here for the Chelsea Thoroughbreds – a syndicate I always find myself cheering on as they drink in the best racing pub in London – The Sydney Arms. He is a colt on an upward trajectory and I thought he ran a very good race on return at Haydock, finishing second to Cap Francais. He is clearly better than a mark of 95 and makes plenty of appeal at around 12/1. I think he’ll be involved in the finish at the very least.
Our second selection in the race is PRESIDENTIAL at a price. He’s around the 16/1 mark at the time of writing. Somehow he drew a blank last year despite several big runs in defeat but he was back to his very best off a 224-day absence to win at Doncaster on Friday. He is turned out quickly under a penalty and still has to prove himself over a mile but he comes here fit and in-form which is more that can be said for many of these and is a big price. Got to be included. Dangers are a plenty and Ouzo is likely to be popular following a promising second on return. More to come off his mark but is priced accordingly. Ambassadorial is the other one I can see running well as that was a good effort when second at Newmarket and he should build on that still 5lb below his last winning mark.
Royal Ascot 1.50 Hampton Court Stakes (Group 3) (1m2f)
Another race this week that very much looks a Derby trial and a few of these could certainly improve to take their place in the Epsom Classic. I quite like JUAN ELCANO who has already ran in a Classic this season, in the 2000 Guineas. That run was impressive, four lengths behind Kameko finishing fifth outrunning big odds at 66/1. His group level form makes him a worthy favourite in this and if not coming too soon he should be tough to beat.
Russian Emperor is my idea of the main danger as ran second on his comeback and wasn’t given a hard time that day. Being by Galileo there should be more to come at this sort of trip.
Royal Ascot 2.25 King George V Stakes (Handicap) (1m4f)
Aidan O’Brien won this last year with South Pacific. We had Constantinople who was denied just a neck in second (1-2-3 for the stable) and felt hard done by that day. Hopefully compensation awaits for us this year and we can go one better! I’ve taken two against the field. KIPPS looks a worthy fav here for Hughie Morrison and David Probert. He shaped like the best horse in the race when beaten a nose at Haydock last week and they clocked a good time that day so with further improvement to come and stripping fitter now he looks sure to go close off the same mark. He is due to go up 5lb so this looks a great opportunity for connections.
If you want something at a bigger price then CONVICT is the one. This colt by Australia really impressed me last season and even when winning at Redcar and Newmarket he looked a work in progress and I think he is sure to do better as a 3yo now. He is a half-brother to the talented Hamish and looks sure to relish this trip. He is up to a mark of 96 now and obviously hasn’t been seen for 238 days but I think he’ll run a big race. Definitely an each way contender in an open race. Dangers include Bodyline who really caught the eye flashing home for second behind Celestran at Yarmouth and Arthurian Fable who ran well when denied a short head at Newmarket and is due to go up 5lb.
Royal Ascot 3.00 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1) (British Champion Series) (1m2f)
This 7 runner Group 1 is a little tougher than expected to call and the marginal vote goes to JAPAN who is still odds-against in places at the time of writing. His class was the deciding factor as he is the best horse in the race in my opinion and hopefully they will go quick enough for him to out-stay them all. His run in the Arc was cracking and form at Ascot at the top level is rock solid. If repeating the run against Crystal Ocean over this trip he should take all the beating.
Headman is the main danger but like a few of these may want a bit more rain. He is surely a Group 1 winner in the making. Globetrotter Addeybb is class but also may want it softer but has ran in the last 67 days so gives him a chance.
Royal Ascot 3.35 Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) (1m)
Charlie Hills AFAAK finished second in this two years ago before going one better last year when making his seasonal reappearance. He hasn’t won since and is still 3lb higher so there are slight negatives. Crowley also rides Alrajaa instead but I’m still convinced the former is going to go close. He seems to come alive over the straight mile and might be worth chancing at 16/1 to repeat the dose. Young Cieren Fallon picks up the ride and claims 3lb which could be the help he needs to get his head back in front.
I’ve also backed KYNREN and DARK VISION in the race given how competitive it is and the enhanced place on offer. The latter looked like he could be a bit of a monster when winning at Goodwood as a 2yo and while he hasn’t quite reached the heights connections would have hoped he is still a Group 2 winner and ran a big race when sent off joint favourite beaten a head by Sir Busker at Newcastle. He is very capable when things drop his way and with the yard going great guns (22 winners in the last fortnight) he should go close at around 16/1. I’ve also had to include David Barron’s 6yo as he loves these big-field scenarios. He has proved a bit frustrating to follow most notably when beaten a neck by Cape Byron in the Victoria Cup but he definitely has it in him and might still fire off this mark. Lord Tennyson and Bell Rock at the head of the market look dangers to all.
Royal Ascot 4.10 Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed Race) (5f)
One of the harder non-handicaps at the meeting with all of these running just once and the vast majority finishing placed or better in that start. I tipped TACTICAL on debut and if you saw that race he was coming with a very strong effort before being badly hampered just after the 2f marker and still stayed on to finish third by 2 lengths. He is drawn in 20 which seems ideal based on Tuesday’s action and with a bit more luck than last time he should go very well for the Queen and in-form trainer Andrew Balding (11 wins since restart).
Wesley Ward’s are always worth a look at Royal Ascot and Sheriff Bianco could put his debut behind him where he was slowly away and be the main danger, drawn well. If the draw was better for his other runner Sunshine City and Ryan Moore’s mount Chief Little Hawk I would give them a better chance but I think the selection is very solid, drawn stand side.
