Ascot 1.50 ITV Home Of Terrestrial Racing Handicap (Class 2) 6f
ITV Racing kicks off with a competitive handicap at Ascot on Saturday and THEOTHERSIDE is taken to continue her upward progression and make it three wins from her last four starts. She was back to her best when winning at Newmarket last time and she could easily improve again. A 7lb rise was expected to be honest as she beat good horses in Will To Win and Hamish Macbeth. Even if you look further back in there to Progressive Rating and Troubador these are certainly no backnumbers. I think she’ll be suited by how this pans out and looks good value at 9/2.
Chil Chil has been the market mover but she disappointed a bit for me on reappearance at Bath and if she races that keen again she will fail to land a blow. Obviously she will be fitter now so is still respected but wouldn’t be for me. Highland Dress is handicapped to his hilt but may emerge as the main danger to the selection.
Haydock 2.05 BetVictor British EBF Dick Hern Stakes (Listed Race) 1m
Interesting race with the classy Veracious returning from a layoff following a wind-op. On her previous form she should take all the beating but she hasn’t won first time out before and it could be worth chancing one at a bigger price. FINAL SONG was desperately unlucky last time out and still only got beat 2 lengths. She ran against Love in the 1000 Guineas and is clearly regarded as a decent horse. I think today is the day for her with a fast mile at Haydock looking to suit. Should outrun her price-tag.
The main danger is obviously the favourite but keep an eye for any money for the Haggas trained horses as he has trained the winner of this 3 times in the last 6 years. He saddles Wejdan and Tomorrow’s Dream here with the latter probably the more interesting of the two having looked good when winning at Goodwood last time.
Ascot 2.25 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Celebration Handicap (Class 2) 1m
Given the shape of this race I think it might be worth chancing one at a price and VIA SERENDIPITY could go better than his odds suggest. He does seem to be more effective on the AW but he is down to a mark of just 83 now and having switched yards to Charlie Fellowes it wouldn’t surprise me to see him run a big race. He won off a mark of 105 at Wolverhampton in February so he is way too well handicapped to ignore in what appears to be a very winnable race.
Jalaad is the favourite which surprises me a bit. He hasn’t looked the most straightforward but the first-time cheekpieces did seem to straighten him up at York. A 5lb rise looks a bit harsh though and the headgear isn’t necessarily going to be as effective again. Opposable for me! Shelir is the danger. He has been catching the eye recently and looks sure to run a big race but is skinny enough in the betting.
Haydock 2.40 BetVictor Rose Of Lancaster Stakes (Group 3) 1m2f
We were all over GLOBAL GIANT before he took the Steventon Stakes at Newbury in decent fashion and we will be sticking with him again today. He has won 2 of his 3 runs this season and even though he may of needed the run when 4th at Sandown on return to the track, the form of that race is rock solid making all 3 of his runs look very good form. He is up in grade now tackling Group company but doesn’t look done improving and is one to keep firmly on side.
The main danger is Zaaki if finding his best but he seems to have disappointed a fair bit lately and the selection will take all the beating. Extra Elusive was behind him last time so has his work cutout to overturn that but will also be a danger if settling better. Hard to recommend much else as the likes of Fox Til and Crossed Baton keep disappointing.
Ascot 3.00 Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire Handicap (Class 2) 1m2f
Kaloor didn’t get the clearest of runs when third at Sandown over 1m6f last time but he can often catch the eye and has become expensive to follow with his sole win coming on debut nearly two years ago now. I’d understand the argument if he was a double-figure price but he is into 5/1 now and the juice has definitely gone so I’m keen to oppose him. AUSTRALIS has done nothing wrong and deserves to be favourite here. 9/4 is still on offer at the time of writing and I think that’s a very fair price all things considered. He went down all guns blazing to Caravan Of Hope in the Northumberland Plate when last seen and remains open to improvement over this trip.
At a bigger price Sleeping Lion should run well for James Fanshawe. He has performed well in both previous visits here and at around 7/1 looks value to hit the frame. May well be worth a saver! Like the selection Holy Kingdom is also by Australia and would be a threat to all if bouncing back from that poor run at Newmarket. Well punted but never landed a blow at any stage.
Newmarket 3.20 Betway Sweet Solera Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) 7f
A race dominated by Richard Hannon and Mark Johnston over the last few years and they look like they will be battling it out again today. I am siding with FLY MISS HELEN who was well backed on debut and won stylishly at Newbury. The step up in trip looks as though it will suit and she will be coming with a late run and hopefully go past them all. She was backed like a good thing first time out and duly delivered so I wouldn’t want to see any negativity in her price.
Dubai Fountain for Mark Johnston has some decent form and will be hard to pass from the front but the selection certainly wasn’t stopping on debut and should find plenty under Sean Levey. Danilova is well bred and looked professional over C&D last time. This harder but also has to be respected. This race should throw up plenty of future winners.
