A really competitive handicap with nothing shorter than 5/1 at the time of writing. AWEEDRAM will love the softer conditions and a mark of 86 doesn’t seem that unfair based on his second at Haydock ahead of the re-opposing Barossa Red (3lb worse off due to claimer not riding). The selection is drawn well and this should be run to suit so I’m sure he will run a big race.

Confide is the danger as he’s unexposed but it’s hard to tell if he will be as good on a softer surface with his best form on good ground or better. Risk Taker is the favourite for Clive Cox and he is also feared but a 9lb rise makes life much tougher.

Sticking with HORTZADAR here who won this last year off the same mark. Ran well when third to Top Rank at Thirsk 18 days ago, needing them to go harder up front. Fared best of those held up so coming back to form. Garden Oasis and Fred should put good pace to the race which will help the selection.

Slade Power feeding Hesslewood is probably the one I fear most. He’s been running well and is just 2lb above his winning mark. The hood didn’t seem to do Sun Power any help last time but he still shouldn’t be completely ruled out.

18 runner handicap on softened ground will be interesting and I am going with two at bigger prices. Both I am hoping they can reproduce some of their old form. IMPRESSOR wasn’t at his best on return to the track but his juvenile form on soft ground would put him bang there and could be much better if he needed the run after a wind-op.

COLD STARE may have finished eighth last time out but he wasn’t as far away as his finishing position suggests. A run to the level of his run on soft ground at Haydock would see him in the mix. Danyah still has plenty to come but he is a bit short in a race of this nature for my liking and I am pretty happy with my two each-way bets.

Ripon 2.40 William Hill Ripon Hornblower Conditions Stakes (Class 2) 6f

A trappy race and none of the four can be completely ruled out. It’s probably a stiff task for Bowman as he finished last at Newbury and has a bit to prove, that’s reflected in his odds. The one I like most is INTERNATIONALDREAM for Richard Fahey. This colt by Acclamation won at Ayr in June and has held his form well in defeat since, not beaten far at Sandown and again acquitting himself well when third to Steel Bull at Goodwood. A return to 6f should suit and he looks well placed to get back to winning ways.

Red Fascinator got off the mark over C&D last time and is open to improvement so should go well but Fountain Cross is probably the one I fear most as this colt by Muhaarar ran well behind Battleground in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. That sort of form has to be feared.

This handicap does look a bit more straightforward than the previous race and SPACE WALK impressed with his attitude winning on soft ground at Haydock last time. He has been gelded which seems to have brought out more improvement and a 5lb penalty shouldn’t be enough to stop him going very close here.

Frontispiece ran a big race following a wind-op on his return to the track and if coming on from that run he has to be the main danger. Rhythmic Intent is a horse I’ve always liked but he was a shade disappointing when only fourth at Newmarket last time. The more rain the better for him here.

I’m giving DAKOTA GOLD another chance here for Michael Dods. He was hugely progressive last season winning five from six at one stage. He has failed to show that form since returning but he may not be one to give up on yet and down to a mark of 107 could give these the runabout. He likes to push forward but hopefully Connor Beasley grabs a tight hold and saves something for the finish. He looks too big a price to me.

Staxton was back to winning ways over C&D 10 days ago and should be thereabouts despite a 4lb rise. One of the dangers! Motagally and Gunmetal are also noted but the latter hasn’t won for a while now so it’s hard to keep staying loyal.

Newbury 3.35 Unibet St Hugh’s Fillies’ Stakes (Class 1) 5f34y

Some good horses in this Listed Fillies race with CAROLINE DALE having the best form on offer. She drops down in class from a very good run in a Group 3 at Ascot. She seems at her best over this trip and providing she handles the softer ground she will be very hard to beat.

Miss Jingles has been running well and has solid form in the book so will be the main danger. One I think could outrun her odds (40/1 at the time of writing) is Queen Of Rio who has won her only race a shade cosily and could be a bit better than her odds suggest.
