Newmarket 1.15 Derrinstown Irish EBF Maiden Stakes (Class 4) 7f
We kicked off yesterday with a 5/1 winner so hopefully we can repeat the dose here. Not the best maiden to open Day 2 of the Cambridgeshire meeting but there are 1 or 2 standouts. I am siding with Dawn Approach colt CROSSFORD for Charlie Hills and Tom Marquand. He ran well to finish third at the St Leger meeting behind a horse in Tawaareq who had already had a run so to push it so close looks rock solid form.
The danger in the race Roscioli also finished third on his only run but I feel the selection has stronger form to his name. Debutant Quintillus has been installed as the favourite but he’ll need to be plenty forward to win this at the first time of asking.
Newmarket 1.50 Tasleet British EBF Rosemary Stakes (Listed Race) 1m
A fiercely competitive renewal and I found it hard splitting a few of these. The one I’ve come down on is BOUNCE THE BLUES for Andrew Balding. This filly by Excelebration looked seriously progressive for John Feane in Ireland and made an encouraging start for this yard when third at Doncaster earlier this month. She was given quite a lot to do by Rob Hornby and was hitting the line strong. The step back up to a mile is firmly in her favour and she can improve enough to go close.
Ummalnar is respected given her profile but I thought she was short enough here given we haven’t seen her for 440 days. Cloak Of Spirits continues to run to a consistent level so shouldn’t be overlooked. In terms of win purposes I just thought she might be worth taking on. Fooraat is probably the one I fear most as she was a good fourth in France last time and is capable of better yet.

Newmarket 2.25 Princess Royal Muhaarar Stakes (Group 3) 1m4f
This looks a cracking renewal as even with a small field there is plenty of class. ALPINISTA shades the vote after a cracking first run at this trip behind superstar Love last time. She won a Listed event fairly well at Salisbury before that and should take all the beating back down to this level.
The one who could serve it up to her is the improving Katara who has won well at Listed level the last two runs however I am siding with the Group 1 experience and form of the selection.
Newmarket 3.00 Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (Group 2) 7f
This looks the best race of the day at Newmarket on Friday and we’ll be hoping ISABELLA GILES can win again. She has won three of her last four and the form stacks up. She relished the step up in trip at Goodwood last time and has earned a crack at this level now. She comes out prominently on speed figures and looks a filly to keep on side.
Monday is bred to be smart but needed her first outing when fourth at Punchestown. She duly improved to open her account at Leopardstown and looks the main danger. It will be interesting to see who leads as there’s plenty of pace on.
Newmarket 3.35 Shadwell Joel Stakes (Group 2) 1m
Benbatl is back to defend his crown in this race after winning this well last season but today he is up against KAMEKO who is back at what I feel is his best trip. He won the 2,000 Guineas well at the start of the year. He has ran well in defeat in the Derby and the Juddmonte, but the mile should suit as long as we don’t get too much rain and I think he will beat Benbatl who hasn’t run in 209 days.
Benbatl is the main danger but another that could go well is Top Rank who we have followed all season but I am not sure he is at Kameko’s level just yet.
Newmarket 4.10 Eqtidaar Godolphin Stakes (Listed Race) 1m4f
Loxley finally got his head back in front at Meydan when last seen, beating Defoe by a short head. While he is plenty talented he doesn’t win enough for me so I’m keen to take him on here. LAAFY has won two of his last four and has looked progressive this year. He is up in grade now but should have more to offer yet and looks good value to overhaul the favourite. Conditions look ideal and I can’t see how he doesn’t go close.
Walton Street is possibly the pace angle and I wouldn’t want to see them give him too much rope in the early stages. Aloe Vera hasn’t been seen for a long time but does still have potential too.
Newmarket 4.45 Shadwell Farm Handicap (Class 3) 1m1f
Wide open race but I am looking at each-way angles in this and WILD HERO comes from a race that was very quick on the clock last time behind Surrey Pride. He has been running well all season and is proven at the track. If he runs to the level of his last run he will outrun his odds, that said I think he will go off shorter than the 8/1 at the time of writing.
Marronnier could be a danger down another pound and back in handicap company, he is also an each-way price and wouldn’t surprise me if he placed. Make It Rain tops the market but will need to find more under a penalty.
