Newmarket 1.15 Blandford Bloodstock Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 4) 7f

I’m keen to side with one with experience here and I think WOOTTON CREEK sets the standard on that close-up second at Chelmsford on debut, albeit with only three runners. She raced keenly which can be expected given it was her first outing and set a good clip before being edged out close home. The form has been well advertised since with both her rivals subsequently earning black type. She is open to plenty of improvement off the back of that and can go one better under William Buick.

Dark Angel filly Hidden Breeze shaped well when fourth at Leicester. She dropped away late but probably needed it and will be fitter now. She can chase the selection home. Sunset Bay is also respected following an encouraging start when fourth at Goodwood. Frankel filly Vesela looks the most intriguing debutant for Ralph Beckett and will be worth a market check.

Newmarket 1.50 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2) 1m

Small field for the Royal Lodge but it looks a solid field with 8 wins between the 5 runners. I am siding with NEW MANDATE who really impressed when taking the Listed contest at Doncaster. He was keen early so may be better than the performance suggests. He then flew home and still won even though he was short of room close home. He will improve for the step up to a mile and I expect another big run.

The main danger to the selection has to be Cobh who is 2 from 3 and the only defeat was to Chindit who has since won the Champagne Stakes at Ascot. Aidan O’Brien sends over Ontario and he will also be thereabouts if stepping forward again.

Haydock 2.05 Close Brothers Handicap (Class 2) 1m

A tricky handicap where there isn’t really a standout form horse and I am going to take an each way bet in this with JUST HISS. He has run some decent time figures in his last few runs and the 11/1 he is being priced at seems big even though he is 2lb out of the weights. I would be disappointed if he didn’t outrun his odds so he makes plenty of appeal.

I would be with Alternative Fact to bounce back after a poor Goodwood run but the weather might dry the track up a fair bit which would be a negative despite the solid form prior to that disappointing Goodwood run. Danyah has progressive form to his name so looks a danger to all.

Newmarket 2.25 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies) 6f

Millisle won this last year for Jessica Harrington and the Irish have another strong fancy in MISS AMULET trained by Kev Condon. This filly has done nothing but improve and she showed a great attitude to edge out Sacred in the Lowther at York last month. That looks the form to focus on and I fancy the pair to finish 1-2 again. The third that day Umm Kulthum won at Ayr last weekend and looks a smart filly herself so the race couldn’t really have worked out any better.

Dandalla is 3-3 and ran out an impressive winner of the Albany at Royal Ascot before doing just enough last time. She may be more of a forward type though so I think she’s opposable here. Similar comments apply to Happy Romance who has been a cash machine for connections but this requires more and she may just be found wanting.

Newmarket 3.00 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) (Colts) 6f

A top notch field go to post in the Middle Park and it looks a very competitive renewal. LUCKY VEGA ironically was very unlucky last time when badly hampered in the National Stakes at the Curragh. On the form of his win in the Pheonix Stakes the time before that he looks the one to beat and Shane Foley will be keen to put things right.

There are a few that could put it up to him but Minzaal is the main danger. Both wins were impressive and clearly has scope for a lot of improvement. Method and Supremacy both impressed last time too so it’s a race I’m really looking forward to.

Curragh 3.15 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes (Group 2) 1m

To say Aidan O’Brien has a good record in this race would be an understatement as he has won the last 9 runnings of this. HIGH DEFINITION looks the first choice in the yard and the way he won last time he could be a very good horse stepping up to Group company on only his second run. With usual improvement he will take all the beating.

The main danger could be one O’Brien doesn’t train for Jessie Harrington in Aussie Ace. He won his maiden fairly comfortably last time from a solid yardstick and should take the step up in trip in his stride.

Newmarket 3.35 bet365 Cambridgeshire Handicap (Heritage Handicap) 1m1f

Kingman colt Tempus could end up being a big gamble on the day as he looked a smart horse in the making winning at Ascot 3 weeks ago. This trip is ideal and he has more to offer so there’s lots to like but in a race as competitive as this I want something at a bigger price and DEREVO looks the one. This colt by Dansili won back-to-back handicaps over further last summer and ran his best race to date when beaten less than a length at Doncaster earlier this month. He is undoubtedly well handicapped off a mark of 95 and I can see him going very close under Ryan Moore. He will need a bit of luck but ticks plenty of boxes for me.

Dangers obviously a plenty and Ilaraab was strongly considered after he made it four wins on the spin at Newbury last week. Another colt with more to come so one to watch (and might be worth a saver at 9/1). Montatham and Fifth Position also made the shortlist in a fiercely competitive renewal which is to be expected.

Newmarket 4.10 British Stallion Studs EBF “Jersey Lily” Fillies’ Nursery Handicap (Class 2) 7f

Quite a big field for a nursery in the UK with 17 due to go to post. I’m looking for one at an each way price and ICONIC QUEEN has looked good in all three runs. Her win last time could probably be marked up as she was in control when idling slightly near the finish. She looks to be going the right way and I’m surprised she’s available at 9/1 at the time of writing.

The main dangers could be any of the previous winners but the pricey Meu Amor looks a good horse and will be much better than an 81 rated animal in time. Renaissance Rose also catches the eye off 84 so has to be respected too.

Newmarket 4.10

Iconic Queen 9/1 each way LONGSHOT

Newmarket 4.40 Bentley Motors Handicap (Class 2) 7f

With Ghalyoon out I’ve decided to take a chance on one in this now and ARIGATO makes the most each way appeal. This gelding by Poet’s Voice is a three-time C&D winner and he was on a real roll until given a bit too much to do at Newmarket. He was badly hampered at Goodwood and then raced too freely at York. He’s the type to bounce back and had looked thoroughly progressive prior to that so at a double-figure price may be worth chancing now.

Documenting arrives on a hat-trick following wins at Ascot and York and has to be feared even up another 4lb. Fleeting Prince is a frustrating sort so is passed over but Hamish Macbeth comes into the reckoning after taking advantage off a reduced mark at Yarmouth last time.
