Ascot 1.20 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (Group 2) 2m

Stradivarius won this two years ago and was touched off by the smallest of margins by Kew Gardens last year. I’d love to see him win this but from a betting perspective I think he’s too short. He was only seventh in the Arc and while John Gosden doesn’t think he had a tough race those excursions surely still would have taken a bit out of him? I think there’s enough doubts to oppose on this occasion. DAWN PATROL is the one I like for last year’s winning trainer. This Galileo colt has impressed me and showed stamina was his strong-suit winning on his first try over this trip at the Curragh last month. He is unexposed and while he’ll need to improve plenty he is entitled to and I think he could go under the radar here at a double-figure price with PC Boudot booked for the ride.

Stablemate Broome hasn’t been seen since finishing fourth in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket in June and could run well. Definitely a horse I think is very talented but the layoff has to be a concern. Search For A Song was back to her best beating Fujaira Prince last time and stays this trip so should run her race but there doesn’t look to be any juice in her price.

Ascot 1.55 Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes (Group 1) 6f

This looks a cracking race with the majority of the top 6 furlong horses set to run. It would be amazing if The Tin Man could roll back the years to win this 4 years after his first win in the race but I just can’t see it. DREAM OF DREAMS is the one for me in this after a really taking win in similar testing conditions at Haydock. He seems to be a bit of a late maturing horse as he is so much better at 6 years old and if running to his Haydock form he should bring up the hat-trick.

This race is stacked with very good horses but the dangers would be Oxted who won the July Cup really well and has since had a wind op and Starman is only 3 so there is like a so much improvement to come and he really could be anything.

Ascot 2.30 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Group 1) 1m4f

Wonderful Tonight and Dame Malliot are vying for favouritism at the time of writing but this race is screaming out each way value and the one that I’m taking a chance with is MEHDAAYIH for John Gosden. This Frankel filly is yet to achieve what connections would have hoped but she hasn’t had many chances at the top level and was far from disgraced in the Champion Stakes here last season and again in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on her sole start last year. I can see this being run at a strong clip and that should help her settle. Looks worth chancing!

Thundering Nights was the other one I was considering. This Night Of Thunder filly has looked progressive and might not be done improving yet for Joseph O’Brien. He’ll have her in great shape for this and if she stays she could have a say in the outcome.

Ascot 3.05 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Mile) 1m

There have been a few upsets in this over the years but it would take a lot in my opinion to get PALACE PIER beaten. He is 5 from 5 and is rated 6lb clear of this field with many of these not running close to his level. He was brought along slowly skipping the Guineas but is reaping the rewards now. His last two wins beating Pinatubo and Alpine Star look rock solid form and he comes here after a nice break. Will take all the beating.

The Revenant has been lightly raced again this year after finishing second in this last year so it’s hard to know where he is at but would rate the danger if in same form as last year. Circus Maximus has been beaten by our selection so I can’t see that form being reversed. One at a bigger price that could run a place is the improving Nazeef who may not be at this level yet but will run a big race at a decent price.

Ascot 3.40 Qipco Champion Stakes (Group 1) 1m2f

Magical looks the one to beat here and she is the right favourite but I’ve got to be with MISHRIFF for Gosden and Dettori. This colt has taken off this season completing the hat-trick in very impressive fashion in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville last time. The scary thing is he is still improving and if he takes a step up again then he has to go close here. It should be a great race as you can’t rule out Lord North either who is clearly extremely talented when things drop right.

Addeybb has rather been ignored in the betting but he is a high-class sort himself with conditions in favour and he comes here having won three of his last four so should run well. At a bigger price Japan will be hoping to get back to his best. Does come here with something to prove though so best watched.

Ascot 4.15 Balmoral Handicap (Class 2) 1m

The only handicap on the card and it looks a fairly open renewal, with the 23 set to go to post. I have two I like in this the first being RAAEQ who I think still has scope for improvement. He was a neck away from being 3 from 3 this year and his win at the track last time was impressive and with more to come he should go close up with the speed.

My final pick on Champions Day is SYMBOLIZE drawn in 1 and a massive 66/1 at the time of writing. That price looks way too big for a horse that has kept good company this season running behind plenty of pattern race winners. He should see out the extra furlong fine and unless getting trapped from stall 1 he will out-run that massive price so has to be included.
