Cheltenham 1.15 Markel Insurance Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) 2m5f

Duc De Beauchene took this last year for David Pipe and Jonjo O’Neill Junior and the yard are looking to defend their crown this time around with the improving INDUNO. He looked very promising winning on hurdles debut at Sedgefield before failing to fire on Boxing Day. That clearly wasn’t his true running and as a result he could be very well handicapped off a mark of 115. Fergus Gillard claims a handy 6lb and he looks to have plenty going for him. The only downside is his price as he is quite short in a race as competitive as this.

Steal A March is one of the dangers for Nicky Henderson. His jumping needs to improve but he is clearly plenty talented so expect him to be involved in the finish. I have backed one at a double-figure price in here as well though as a saver. LUNGARNO PALACE has some rock solid form in the book and the blinkers could help perk him up. He was well held behind Captain Tom Cat here last month but should be fitter now and it wouldn’t surprise me if he went well for a long way.

Cheltenham 1.50 Mucking Brilliant Paddy Power Handicap Chase (Class 2) 2m

This race looks a solid handicap chase and I like the form of the two who ran behind Rouge Vif here last time. Rouge Vif is due to run in the Grade 2 Shloer Chase at Cheltenham on Sunday and the form should work out well. BEAT THE JUDGE should hold the form over On The Slopes (3rd and 5th). The selection has a bit more scope for improvement as a 5 year old and looks to be holding his form well and will go close again.

The danger is the re-opposing On The Slopes who should improve from that 5th last time as that was his first run of the season. He is a horse I like so I fancy the pair to fight this out. Magic Saint is favourite but I expected more at Aintree and I think he’s best watched for now.

Cheltenham 2.25 SSS Super Alloys Supports Racing Welfare Novices’ Chase (Class 2) 2m4f

I was really impressed with the way PROTEKTORAT took the field apart at Carlisle on chase debut last month and if he reproduces that sort of form here he will get these in trouble. He put in some great leaps and is clearly going to be a better chaser than hurdler. Dan Skelton continues to fire in the winners and this talented sort looks to have a huge chance of making it 2-2 in this discipline. He made all the last day and it will be interesting to see if they adopt similar tactics as obviously Southfield Stone usually goes forward. The latter is a danger off the back of that win here last month but he has to give 3lb to the selection.

Mossy Fen is certainly a chaser on looks but he rather disappointed on return here last month behind Galvin and will need to have come on plenty from that to put up any sort of resistance to the market principals. Paint The Dream is no back number but he looks to be coming up against some smart types here.

Cheltenham 3.00 Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase (Class 2) 3m6f

This was one of the last few races we saw on a racecourse when EASYSLAND took on Tiger Roll at the Festival and we heard plenty before the race that Easysland was special but we were blown away by the performance and he should take all the beating again. He hasn’t had a run since the Festival which is a shame but he went well fresh last year and it will take a huge effort from Tiger Roll to reverse the form.

Tiger Roll has had a run on the flat which is encouraging but gives 4lb to Easysland and it’s likely his rival could still be improving. Grand National hope Potters Corner makes his return as well and hopefully he can run a creditable race with an eye to the future.

Cheltenham 3.35 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m5f

Kim Bailey has started the season in terrific form and he looks to have another promising young horse on his hands in the shape of DOES HE KNOW. This 5yo took apart a good race over C&D last time and looks firmly on the upgrade. He stayed on strongly through the line and is improving all the time. Petrastar and The Grand Visir should take them along and I can see him getting settled early and into a nice rhythm before picking them off one by one up the Cheltenham hill.

Grand Mogul is the obvious danger for Nicky Henderson. He was disappointing in two runs over hurdles last season but got back on track at Chepstow on return, winning by 7 lengths. While he did that nicely he almost certainly needs to improve again to make a race of it with the favourite and I’m not sure this track is what he’s crying out for.

Cheltenham 4.05 Valda Energy Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) 2m1/2f

This race looks like it has a few well handicapped sorts in and I wouldn’t be surprised if it produces some good form-lines. I thought ONE TRUE KING would be favourite for this after his run behind the ridiculously well handicapped Tegerek last time out. He was well thought of going into the race and off 2lb higher he has to go close with his experience round here counting for a lot.

The Bees Knees and Leroy Leroy both still look well handicapped and I wouldn’t be surprised if these 3 fill the places. Panic Attack is fairly prominent in the betting but her opening mark demands plenty more.
