Cheltenham 1.15 CF Roberts Electrical & Mechanical Services Mares’ Handicap Chase (Challenger Mares’ Series Qual’) Class 3 2m41/2f
Our first ITV race of the day looks pretty competitive with plenty of these running well last time out. All could have more to come but ARIAN is on a hat-trick and I think she may have had a bit in hand when winning at Warwick. Richard Johnson is riding again and she will go close even though she is up 7lb.
Black Tulip is down in trip and could do well under an aggressive ride around Cheltenham and rates the main danger. Agent Valdez is the favourite at the time of writing but I think she may need the extra few furlongs to see her in her best light.
Cheltenham 1.50 Fitzdares Club Loves The Peterborough Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Class 1 2m4f
As good as this race is it’s hard to work out from a betting perspective but after much deliberation the one I’ve come down on is KALASHNIKOV for Amy Murphy. This 7yo is a very smart individual when bringing his best form to the table and while we haven’t seen that for a while he could have it in him to go close here. He was given a spin over hurdles at Haydock last month and that should leave him spot on for this fitness-wise. He is a Grade 1 winner when at his best so should have every chance and is a nice price at around 5/1.
Top Notch won this last year and has had a wind op since last seen when third to Frodon at Kempton. He is the one to beat but it wouldn’t surprise me if he found one or two too good. Mister Fisher was pulled up on return but also has to be feared if bouncing back.
Bangor 2.05 Buy Christmas Cards @ijr.org.uk Handicap Hurdle (Challenger Stayers’ Hurdle Series Qualifier) Class 3 2m7f
A small field for this handicap with just 4 set to go to post and the only mare in the field is the standout, ROBIN GOLD. She won with what looked a lot in hand when just doing what was needed to win at Ascot. She is up 8 pounds for that but it shouldn’t stop her from taking this if in the same form. She has won 3 of her last 4 runs and I can see why she is a short price to make it 4 from 5.
Exod’ela for the Snowden yard has put up some very good time figures in the past at this trip and he looks to be the main danger to the selection. Both Poker Play and Samuel Jackson come here with a bit to prove and it would be somewhat of an upset if either managed to win.
Cheltenham 2.25 Unibet Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race) Class 1 3m2f
Another competitive race and I’m quite surprised Court Maid is as short as she is. I know she has the sexy profile coming into this having won three of her last four but she has a penalty to contend with and she is meeting so tough handicappers here. I think she’s opposable at 15/8 and I’ll be looking to get her beat.
STORM CONTROL built on a couple of encouraging runs to land a handicap at this course last month and the way he jumped that day a 6lb rise won’t be enough to prevent another bold showing. He kept pulling out more all the way to the line so it was a real likeable effort. Black Corton looks the danger if putting in a clean round.
Cheltenham 3.00 Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Class 2 3m6f
Gutted Easysland isn’t going to run in this due to the handicapper making him run off worse terms than the horses that beat him last time out as I think he would have a good chance at this tip. The 1-2 that day Kingswell Theatre and BEAU DU BRIZAIS were both out of the handicap so both runs were very impressive. The latter is now 5lb better off and may have more to come over these obstacles compared to Kingswell Theatre who will have competition for the lead with Step Back running. The 7/1 available at the time of writing looks a fair price as I thought he would be half that.
Neverushacon is the favourite, hence the bigger price for the selection. He is a good horse but his best form is at 3 miles and he hasn’t seen this trip out that well at Cheltenham being beaten 54 lengths and 20 lengths so might be worth taking on.
Cheltenham 3.35 Citipost Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) Class 2 3m
It doesn’t get any easier here but I’ve decided to focus on the form of that Listed race on the Old Course here last month that saw ON THE BLIND SIDE get the better of Mrs Milner. He is up 5lb but looked to be just saving a bit for himself and I think there is more under the bonnet if needed. The third Golan Fortune has since come out and won easily so the form has been given a handsome boost.
Dangers are a plenty and Mohaayed only went down narrowly to a resurgent Unowhatimeanharry at Aintree last month. He still looks well handicapped off the back of that and could land a major blow. The latter is also one to consider with a 3lb rise looking perfectly fair. Others to note include Come On Teddy who will be fitter now and is also very capable.
