Cheltenham 1.50 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 2m41/2f
This handicap does look a deep race and barring Frodon 2 years ago those near the top of the weights don’t have the best record. With a lot of the fancied horses at the top of the weights I am happy to take a chance on SOUTHFIELD STONE. He is 25/1 at the time of writing and has already won at Cheltenham this season. He only has to carry 11 stone and I think he will outrun his big price.
We love Master Tommytucker as he is such an exciting horse but he carries top weight and they are trying him in a big field to see how much he has improved this year and he will be competitive in bigger races as the season goes on. Coole Cody dug very deep last time but made a lot of mistakes or he would appeal off 143 but it would be taking a big chance on jumping.
Doncaster 2.05 bet365 December Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) 3m
Following a promising run at Aintree when third to Acey Milan OFALLTHEGINJOINTS made no mistake at Exeter last month, travelling and jumping well before asserting in good style near the finish. He beat a useful looking horse in St Barts so with further improvement to come rates the one to beat in this contest. I’m surprised he isn’t odds-on as he has the potential to be better than these and I know connections are very bullish about his chances.
We were with House Island when he won at Ludlow last time and while that was a likeable effort his main market rival in that race Pileon failed to fire so I have a few questions over the form. If he steps forward again he could emerge as the danger. The Mighty Don ran on Friday so is unlikely to be turned out so quickly. Hurricane Harvey was thrashed by Ga Law at Wincanton and will also need to show more to figure.
Cheltenham 2.25 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) 3m
Not the best Grade 2 on paper and unless one of these improves massively for the step up to 3 miles I have this between a couple of them. ASHTOWN LAD is on a hat-trick after convincing wins at Wetherby and Uttoxeter. He was stepping up to just shy of 3 miles last time and put up his best performance to date. He looks like he has plenty to come over 3 miles and will take a lot of beating.
Danny Kirwan rates as the main danger with Nicholls taking his time with this one and he looks like he needs the 3 mile trip. Wynn House has won her last two but had to work hard last time so definitely needs more to win again.
Doncaster 2.40 bet365 Summit Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m1/2f
This looks a good clash between the front two and there might not be as much between them as the market is suggesting but even still I have to side with the potential of MONMIRAL here for Paul Nicholls. This French recruit was very impressive on hurdles debut at Auteuil brushing aside 14 rivals in convincing style before making a winning start under Rules at Exeter last month. He travelled notably well and is clearly improving as he gains experience. This is another stepping stone and he is fancied to have too much for Glorious Zoff. The latter is promising and he should also have more to come but looks to just be bumping into one again.
Gold Desert is 2 from 3 over hurdles and has a good attitude so may prove best of the rest with this stiffer track in his favour as well.
Cheltenham 3.00 Unibet International Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m1f
This looks like a cracking renewal of the International and it features a few horses who will be competing at Grade 1 level throughout the the season. The hard luck story of the Cheltenham Festival GOSHEN is back over hurdles after two average runs on the flat to get him fit. He was top class in the Triumph at the Festival and bar the unseat at the last he would have won that by a long way. If he is in the same form as last seen at Cheltenham he has to go close in this.
He will have a bit of competition at the front but the main danger might just be following in behind as Sceau Royal has some exceptional form since returning to hurdling and was last seen finishing 2nd to the Champion Hurdler Epatante. I expect him and Goshen to be fighting out the finish if Goshen hasn’t scooted clear from the front.
Doncaster 3.15 bet365 Handicap Chase 3m
Boldmere has been dropped 2lb since finishing fourth at Bangor and he will certainly have his supporters here but I didn’t expect him to be the 7/2 favourite so I’m happy to oppose. JERSEY BEAN is eyeing up the hat-trick and even with a 10lb rise I think he’s going to go close. He won really well at Exeter and was actually eased down at the line. His jumping has looked assured and I think he has plenty going for him here.
Manofthemountain is a horse I like and he has a terrific record over fences having won 4 from 5 completed starts. He was only fourth at Cheltenham last time but that was competitive and the third Cloth Cap has gone on to hack up in the Ladbrokes Trophy since. He should be bang there. The returning Give Me A Copper is also respected.
Cheltenham 3.35 Close Brothers Mares’ Handicap Hurdle 2m41/2f
Both Indefatigable and Molly Ollys Wishes are non runners this morning so the race has cut up somewhat with just the 8 horses heading to post now. I was impressed with THE WHITE MOUSE at Wincanton last month and she could prove hard to beat off an 8lb rise. She kept pulling out more to fend them off and crossed the line with a bit in hand. Eglantine Du Seuil was only fifth on that occasion and she has her work cutout to close that gap.
Couple of dangers probably headed by Aggy With It who travelled notably well when winning last time and can do better yet. Miah Grace is also a likeable mare who ran a cracker when second to Mario De Pail at Wetherby and this stiffer test can suit.
