York 1.40 Langleys Solicitors British EBF Marygate Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) 5f
I eventually came down on two in this race and after much deliberation I’ve sided with Kodiac filly CRAZYLAND for Clive Cox. This filly made a perfect start showing bright speed to win on debut at Windsor. She had Sienna Bonnie readily held in second and that filly posted a decent speed figure when winning impressively at Bath on her next start. She can take another step forward here and if she does she should have a good chance in making it 2-2.
Bellarena Lady was the other one I liked and I expect her to give the selection most to think about. Ed Dunlop’s Due Diligence filly chased home the useful Desert Dreamer on debut at Newmarket and improved to win at Leicester last month. She has the scope to kick on and I can see her running a big race.
York 2.10 Oaks Farm Stables Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) 1m
For a Listed race this looks a cracker and with plenty of these showing they are talented enough to go on to bigger races after this. SNOW LANTERN was one we thought could run a big race in the 1,000 Guineas but Richard Hannon had other plans for her. She looked a top class filly when dealing with the well fancied Derab comfortably at Newbury and even on debut she ran Zabeel Queen close who has gone on to run in very good Group races. She is clearly still progressing at pace and with usual improvement from her last run she will win this.
Love Is You is the main danger after a big run in the Nell Gwyn at Newmarket on her comeback behind two horses who ran very well in the 1000 Guineas, especially Saffron Beach (2nd). I expect these two to be battling it out but I feel Snow Lantern has a higher ceiling.

Barbill actually finished in front of May Sonic when second at Kempton so I’m not sure why the latter is such a clear favourite here but even so I think the pair might be worth taking on with APLOMB for Jane Chapple-Hyam. This son of Lope De Vega used to be trained by William Haggas and while he wasn’t seen to best effect on his last few starts he didn’t run badly when fifth at Doncaster over this trip and there’s good reason to think he’ll run a big race here. This smaller field will help and if he does bounce back he is a danger to all.
Barbill shouldn’t be far away and looms as one of the dangers but Major Jumbo is also feared given the handicapper has dropped him another 2lb. Beyond Equal is consistent but looks vulnerable from a win point of view.

I love to watch plenty of the best handicaps back and BLUE CUP is the prime example why it is worth doing. He looks well in off a mark of 93 after nothing going right on return at Epsom. He broke slowly, was keen early and was blocked off so many times in the straight and still finished 2 and a half lengths behind the winner. He looks a horse who could be rated in the 100s and I think he will take all the beating.
Other than the selection looking well-in on ratings it is quite an open race where most of these can’t be ruled out from reaching the frame. At the bigger prices Fishable has the form to run a big race along with Surrey Pride who I think has a lot of talent and if the ground doesn’t get much softer he is a big price.

With 5 wins from 7 starts last term SIR RON PRIESTLEY somehow went a bit under the radar but he capped off a fine season with a brave second to Logician in the St Leger and he has looked better than ever on return winning convincingly at Nottingham on return before following up in great style in a Group 2 at Newmarket last time. He never does anything too flashy but keeps grinding and that’s what you need over this sort of trip. He is likely to push forward again under Franny Norton and I think it’s going to take a big performance to stop him landing the hat-trick.
Santiago won the Irish Derby last year but better was expected in the St Leger and he disappointed again on return when only fourth of six at Navan. He is likely to come on for that run but even still he’s bumping into a progressive stayer in Sir Ron Priestley and might struggle to reel him in. Nayef Road is likely to race prominently and it wouldn’t surprise me if he finished second with not a lot landing a blow.
York 3.40 Jigsaw Sports Branding Handicap (Class 4) 7f
This race looks set for a record number of runners in what is usually a competitive race as it is. I am having two cracks at this with the first being BOARDMAN who put up one of the best runs of his career so far to romp home at Haydock. That was in heavy ground but he handles the fast ground as well. As a result of him running in this so soon after that run he is 4 pounds well in and should run a big race again.
3 of the last 5 winners of the race were at double-figure prices and CASSY O is a bigger price than I expected after he has gone close on his first two runs of the season. He didn’t go from the front last time and with limited pace on here he could get an easy lead on his part of the track and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he at least placed. Trinity Lake who finished In front of Cassy O that day is the main danger as he was raised only 1 pound for that second place finish. I just have the feeling this race could suit Cassy O better and he could reverse that form.
