Aintree 1.30
A fascinating race to kick off ITV Racing on Saturday with AHOY SENOR needing to bounce back from that bitterly disappointing run in the Charlie Hall. He was 40 lengths behind the winner Bravemansgame but was eased when beaten and make no mistake he still retains potential. He won the Mildmay over C&D on final start last season and is clearly well suited by this track. He will try and make all and should be hard to catch.
Chantry House was last seen pulling up in the Gold Cup behind A Plus Tard but has good form at this track having also won the Mildmay a couple of years ago. He has had a wind op but could still emerge as the main danger to the selection.
Sandown 1.45
A race won by Arkle winner Edwardstone last year and this years favourite for the race at Cheltenham JONBON runs here. He has only been beaten once and that was in the Supreme by superstar stablemate Constitution Hill. He made an impressive chase debut last month and this looks the next logical step for him. He should add another 1 to his record here and justify cramped odds in the process.
Boothill is a worthy challenger after a couple of nice handicap wins. He beat So Scottish last time who looks like a graded performer and is entitled to take his chance here. That said he will have to find some more improvement to beat the selection.
Snow Leopardess won this last year for Charlie Longsdon and does try and defend her crown. She was pulled up at Warwick on reappearance though and couple that with her Grand National disappointment she has a bit to prove now being a 10yo. I prefer GESSKILLE who ran a big race when denied a nose by Al Dancer at Aintree last month. A return to further here can help so he has a big shout of going one better.
Given the make-up of the race I am also giving FANTASTIKAS a chance at a huge price. I know he failed to fire somewhat at Cheltenham on return but he should tighten up from that and if jumping better may well be able to surprise a few here.
Sandown 2.20
This race in recent years has some very well fancied horses at the top of the weights but the last 4 have gone to horses carrying under 11 stone. There are a few that I think have a chance of upsetting the favourite Love Envoi with HERMES BOY looking the best value of them. He spent last season mainly in novice events and was never far away. He ran well off a mark of 124 in a handicap making his current mark of 119 very appealing.
Playful Saint is the other one I think will take advantage of his lower weight and be fitter for his run in October and rates the main danger. Love Envoi is a class horse but I am not sure he can give the weight away to some good sorts and he is short enough too.
Aintree 2.40
I have to admit I had just about given up on GUNSIGHT RIDGE and then he returned better than ever to win here last month. He was a horse that had looked so promising winning at Sandown last season but he blew out next time and then pulled up here back in April. He won last time despite making mistakes and is still armed with a lot of potential. He is only 4lb higher and I expect him to keep improving as he has only had 6 starts over fences.
Riders Onthe Storm capitalised on a sliding mark to win the Old Roan on reappearance. I thought he was given a peach then though and while the form looks solid I wouldn’t want to take a short price in this. Knight In Dubai also a danger if building on that Bangor run.
Sandown 2.55
This years Tingle Creek will be a cracking race if all of these run on Saturday. SHISHKIN has to be the one to beat if back to form. He won 10 in-a-row before pulling up in the Champion Chase due to the ground being too soft. For a trainer who is overly cautious Henderson shouldn’t have run him on it. I expect him to be back to his best here and add another Grade 1 to his previous 3 wins at this level.
The rivals are seemingly queing up to take him on with Paul Nicholls going for the third win on the bounce in this race with Greaneteen who won it at 12/1 last year. He carried top weight impressively to win the Haldon Gold Cup recently so is clearly flying.
Arkle winner Edwardstone was opposed so many times last season but won 5 races before being beaten by the re-opposing Gentleman De Mee. All the rivals are top class but Shishkin at his best will take all the beating.
Aintree 3.15
Another tricky race to find the winner but I do like the chances of WALKING ON AIR for Nicky Henderson. This Walk In The Park gelding remains thoroughly unexposed and despite pulling up in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle here he retains plenty of potential on return dropping into a handicap for the first time. He has only had two runs over hurdles and quite simply could still be anything.
Langer Dan produced a massive run to beat Fils D’oudairies over C&D in April and looked to need the run on return when third to Dashel Drasher last month. He should definitely get involved. Harbour Lake and Herbiers are also very much respected.
Sandown 3.30
I don’t think this race is as deep as usual and I would be disappointed if my two in here can’t land the spoils. REVELS HILL ran really well on his comeback run to finish second at Ascot last month. He is back to his favoured distance here and has to be the one they all have to beat based on his performances in handicaps last season. He was doing all his best work late last time so will love going back up in trip.
At a much bigger price PLANNED PARADISE in first-time cheekpieces appeals after a poor run last time. He stays well and after being dropped a couple of pounds I fancy him to run into the places at least. Deise Aba looks to be the biggest danger back at this track.
