Newbury 1.15
With the rain finally getting into the ground it is no surprise to see Venetia Williams start to fire in the winners. She had a nice horse out yesterday in Easy As That and has another one at Newbury on Saturday in GAMARET. This son of Coastal Path has won 2 of his 3 starts to date and stayed on well at Fontwell when last seen so if this turns testing his stamina should come into play. No surprise to see him favourite and is sure to go well.
Only Money has been in great form bolting up at Plumpton on return and then following up impressively at Worcester. He has been beaten twice since but in good contests and looks the danger. Gallic Geordie fell last time but wasn’t shaping badly.
In a really open renewal it may pay to side with the improving LAST QUARTER. He stepped up to this trip on his comeback run after a wind op. He won a tad cosily and will likely step forward a lot for that run and is totally unexposed at this trip. Claimer Phillip Armson takes off the 3lb penalty and he will surely go well again at a nice price. I’m surprised he is as big as 9/1 as that looks good value.
Langley Hundred is the favourite at the time of writing after two wins since stepping up in trip and will have more to come as well. The 6lb penalty won’t be enough to stop him being a danger to all of his rivals. Of the rest Farmer’s Gamble should run a decent race.
Newbury 1.50
Harry Fry has been very particular with where he sends LADY ADARE next having been entered up plenty over the past 3 weeks or so. He has decided on this race and that could prove telling. She is a thoroughly progressive mare who is yet to taste defeat. She won by 16 lengths over hurdles at Taunton last time. This is the biggest test of her credentials yet but I have a feeling she is one to keep firmly on side.
Given the nature of the race I’m going to have a saver on BLENKINSOP who has also been in terrific form winning his last 3 straight. He showed a good attitude to prevail at Exeter last time and if improving again has sound claims. Pikar looks to be the biggest danger.
Warwick 2.10
This doesn’t look a deep race and MIDNIGHT MOSS looks like a solid option against the favourite. He ran a good race on his comeback run which was his first start for the yard and after a wind-op. He carries 3lb more after finishing second but he should strip fitter for his first run of the season and I would be surprised if he didn’t at least go close here. He is 4/1 at the time of writing and I’d have him shorter than that.
The danger is the favourite Go Steady who won well earlier this month. He is solid but at just over half the price of selection he might be a bit short as he looks at his best at the shorter trip (2m4f). At a bigger price High Counsel might surprise a few and run well.
Newbury 2.25
Easily the most competitive race of the day on ITV Racing on Saturday so I’ve decided to take 3 against the field. My main play will be TALLOW FOR COAL for Jamie Snowden. He improved to win impressively over fences at Lingfield last month and up 5lb looks set to run another big race here. He has a fair bit of scope so might go on progressing for a while yet and this test should suit.
I was with UNDERSUPERVISION when he won at Doncaster and I thought there was enough encouragement in that reappearance third to make him of interest here. The other one at a price is KILLER KANE who has a squeak if building on that fourth here last time.
Lingfield 2.40
This race looks an ideal opportunity for WADACRE GRACE to get her head in front after two very close seconds. She lost out by under a length on her last run and the handicapper has given her a chance by leaving her on the same mark. If she runs to the level of her last run she has to have a big chance here in what appeals to be a winnable race. She looks to have leading form claims compared to the rest of the field.
Morgan Fairy is the main danger back down to a mile. She has the best form in the book but not recent and has to give a lot of weight away to the selection who might have a fitness edge as well with Morgan Fairy not running for 3 months.
Newbury 3.00
The Challow is often won by a smart horse and Paul Nicholls has won it for the last two years with Bravemansgame and Stage Star. He saddles the favourite HERMES ALLEN and it would take a brave man to oppose. He was an expensive purchase and has so far lived up to the hype bolting up on debut over hurdles at Stratford and then looking potentially exciting winning by 9 lengths at Cheltenham. He is definitely the one to beat here.
Joyeux Machin was impressive winning by 5 lengths at Fairyhouse last time staying on strongly. He is going the right way and shouldn’t be underestimated. I think he is the clear danger. Crambo impressed at Ascot but that form has been let down by the second since.
Newbury 3.35
In a really competitive renewal it may pay to side with DOCTOR KEN each way. He has really stepped forward since going chasing with a win and second last month over fences. He will handle the forcast softer conditions better than some of these and with improvement to come he looks overpriced in an open race. He will likely be up with the pace too which might end up suiting if it gets testing.
Bold Endeavour routed the opposition on his first run for Nicky Henderson earlier this month and could go well again but that was on fast ground compared to what he will face here. The main danger could well be Nothin To Ask who has thrived since going chasing.
