Thurles 1.40 Fakir D’oudairies (best price 6/4)
Top-class chaser who won 3 times last year including twice at the top level at Ascot and Aintree; bumped into Gold Cup favourite Galopin Des Champs on return at Punchestown; obvious chance to go one better.
It is hard to look past FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES for this despite the fact Mullins has won this for the past 3 years. The latter bumped into Galopin Des Champs on reappearance at Punchestown and with that under his belt he should be difficult to beat here. His form last season is hard to fault beating the likes of Hitman at Aintree and with Chacun Pour Soi not looking the same horse I’m expecting a pretty routine win here. Chacun Pour Soi made a bad error at Leopardstown on return and could never recover. He is an 11yo now and this is going to take a big performance if he is going to outgun those younger legs. French Dynamite was fifth to Conflated in the Savills Chase last time. He also needs to do more.

Newcastle 1.45 Rosa Del Rio (best price 7/4)
Unexposed filly who was handed a couple of stiff tasks as a 3yo and despite not troubling the leaders on return at Chelmsford she was only beaten 3 lengths; type to improve now handicapping and this winnable.
This doesn’t look the strongest of contests so ROSA DEL RIO might be worth chancing on handicap debut for Simon and Ed Crisford. The yard are operating at a 30% strike rate in the past fortnight and they had a big winner yesterday in Al Agaila taking the Winter Oaks in these silks. This filly by Fastnet Rock could be off a lenient mark now handicapping and with improvement a near certainty she is expected to win this. Harry Burns claims a handy 3lb and I can see her finishing best. Russian Virtue has won his last two over hurdles and looks the danger back on the Flat. He was well held here though back in October and needs to do more despite the step back up in trip likely suiting him.
