Cheltenham 1.20
A week later than scheduled and at Cheltenham now the Clarence House has 3 more runners than last week but the top 2 in the market are unchanged. ENERGUMENE is the one to beat with his only loss (2nd) coming in this race last year at Ascot in the battle with Shishkin. He won the Champion Chase at the Festival last year and will be tough to beat here before going back in March to try and retain his crown.
Edwardstone is the main danger on the form of his Arkle win at the track at the Festival and impressive Tingle Creek win. He unseated last time so that is why the selection is clear as is so straight forward. All the rest have a lot to find on all known form and ratings.
Following a really encouraging return when second to Amarillo Sky FUGITIF took another big step forward to win impressively at Chepstow last month and even hiked up 10lb I think he is going to take a bit of beating here. He relished the trip and remains unexposed over it especially over fences. If he is in that sort of form again then he will go close to justifying favouritism here and I’m keen to row in with him.
Given the nature of the race I’m also going to have an each way saver at a price and that would have to be the top-weight BRAVE SEASCA for Venetia Williams. He needs to bounce back after that blip last time but definitely looks worth another chance at juicy odds.
Doncaster 2.05
After missing her run at Haydock last week where I fancied her to take this EPATANTE looks the one to beat again. She has form far above any of her rivals here with a Champion Hurdle win and she finished second in that race behind Honeysuckle last year. She has been second to Constitution Hill on her last few runs and this is a far easier task so I fully expect her to justify cramped odds.
The market looks to have them in the right order with Martello Sky the main danger back down to a trip she has won over before and she should chase the selection home. Galice Macalo looks best of the rest but has enough to find.
Cheltenham 2.25
Dan Skelton seems to have found the key to PROTEKTORAT now and there is no doubt he is a seriously impressive racehorse when everything clicks. That is precisely what happened in the Betfair Chase as he stormed clear to win by 11 lengths. He has been freshened up again with this the target and if in the same form then he wins this. He has won 5 times over fences now and the scary thing is there could still be more to come.
Grand National hero Noble Yeats is the obvious danger having impressed with how he stayed on to beat Dashel Drasher, Ahoy Senor and Sounds Russian in the Many Clouds Chase at Aintree last month. He should run well again.
Doncaster 2.40
In a wide open renewal I am going to go with two at bigger prices. IDALKO BIHOUE ran well in third behind Hermes Allen in the Challow. That was just his second run over hurdles and to be dropped into a Grade 1 he must be highly rated at home. He will improve for that and should go close in an easier race than last time.
TWIG is my other selection for the Ben Pauling yard who have won this a couple of times over the last few years. He he has a bit more experience than some of his rivals. He looks very good over both hurdles and fences and this race looks like a decent step up for him and he should run well at an each way price.
Stay Away Fay is the obvious danger and the favourite at the time of writing. He is clearly improving but is short enough in an open race at a time of year the yard sometimes go quiet due to flu jabs so is worth taking on. He also lacks experience so might need more time to really hit top stride.
Cheltenham 3.00
I am really keen to oppose Paisley Park here. I love the horse but I can’t bring myself to back an 11yo at 5/4 for the Cleeve Hurdle. He has won the last 3 renewals but that Kempton win may well have taken a bit out of him and even if it hasn’t that flat spot could cost him here up against some younger legs. I’ll be cheering him on but not from a betting perspective sadly.
The one I like is GELINO BELLO back over hurdles. He looked hugely promising winning at Newbury and Aintree before going chasing. He had excuses at Kempton last time due to the low sun and could be an interesting proposition for the Stayers Hurdle in March.
Doncaster 3.15
Another favourite I am opposing here and I have two chances against him. TEA FOR FREE is a horse I thought would be much closer in price to Ga Law and looks good value here. He has won his last 4 rising over 30lb in the handicap. He is up 7lb here but I feel that might not be enough to stop him going very close to completing a five-timer.
At a massive price SHANTY ALLEY looks underestimated after finishing second twice on his last few runs. He didn’t complete a race last season but looks back to his best this season and could be primed to go well. I was surprised he was available as big as 20/1 in the betting so definitely worth an each way saver in an open race.
Ga Law is a really interesting favourite stepping up to 3 miles. He definitely has the quality to win this but at a shorter price to see if he stays or not I am keen to be against him here. Cap Du Nord has cheekpieces back on and came good this time last year so is another one to note especially as he has placed in the last 2 renewals of this race.
Cheltenham 3.35
Pembroke hasn’t done much wrong winning his last two over hurdles and impressing with how he went through the line at Ludlow. He will go well and is respected but I like HENRI THE SECOND and will keep him on side here. He loved this trip staying on strongly at Sandown last month and I can just see him coming home well again up that hill and he is still armed with a great deal of potential.
It is not just a two-horse race though as Can You Call won impressively at Uttoxeter and would likely get competitive if in the same form. Rock My Way bumped into Weveallbeencaught last time and that is solid form so he is also feared in a good race.
