Musselburgh 1.22

This race has really cut up since I first looked it earlier and the week. FILS DE ROI gets the tentative vote. He would have finished in-front of The Churchill Lad if he didn’t fall last time out. He won his last two before that and if bouncing back from the fall will run a massive race.

Afadil is the favourite at the time of writing and will be a danger to all of these. His maiden win looks fair but will need to improve as you would expect on 2nd run to take this. Shared isn’t without a hope at a double figure price and could go well.

Musselburgh 1.22

Fils De Roi 7/2

Leopardstown 1.40

This looks a really competitive renewal which is usually won by a smart horse and most of the time they are trained by Mullins. Ellliot hasn’t done too well in comparison but this could be his year with MIGHTY POTTER. Other than that blip at Cheltenham he had a solid hurdles campaign but they have always thought of him as a chaser in the making and they were right. He beat Gaillard Du Mesnil and Banbridge with ease on his second start over fences and he should have plenty more to come now.

James Du Berlais is the main danger after running out a very good winner after over 20 months off. He was a solid hurdler and if improving for the run he will give the selection something to think about. Gaillard Du Mesnil will need to improve to reverse the form with Mighty Potter and I’m struggling to see it. Journey With Me won easily at Naas and looked to have the race in the bag at Punchestown before a late surge from Impervious saw him go down half a length into second. No surprise were he to run well again.

Musselburgh 1.55

Another tricky race to assess but I guess a tentative vote would go to FRIEND OR FOE carrying top weight to victory. My hopes would be pinned on him returning to something like his best back on better ground. When he made all at Leicester last year he looked quite a nice horse but back on softer ground he has failed to fire the last twice. That was obviously a good race at Wetherby though and he was only beaten 6 and a half lengths in the end. This is easier and he should be right in the mix.

Hard to pinpoint an exact danger but Pay The Piper isn’t running too badly and will likely get back to his best at some point. He is down another 1lb and should get competitive. Dreams Of Home has won 2 of his last 3 but was well held at Sandown last time.

Leopardstown 2.10

Things really seem to be clicking for BLUE LORD now and he ran out a really impressive winner of the Grade 1 over C&D over Christmas. He had stablemate Chacun Pour Soi readily held back in third and cruised 11 lengths clear from Captain Guinness in the end. He has won 6 of his 7 starts over fences now with that sole defeat coming at the hands of Edwardstone in the Arkle. This looks another stepping stone towards the Champion Chase at Cheltenham next month and you’d be foolish to oppose.

Gentleman De Mee is nowhere near the horse we saw beat Edwardstone at Aintree and is hard to recommend so that might leave Sceau Royal to pick up the pieces for second. He is an 11yo now but he chased home Greaneteen when last seen over fences.

Blue Lord 2/7

Musselburgh 2.25

Like the Truimph earlier on the card we have a very small field with TOOTHLESS looking like the one to beat. He won by a massive 35 lengths on debut and you would think he has a lot more to come. He is a half-brother to Sceau Royal so he could really be a classy sort and take this.

The main rivals is Carcaci Castle who has won 3 in a row and I know the yard really rate him. He seems to handle any ground and rates the main danger.

Leopardstown 2.40

In such an open race I have two I quite like with INDIGO BREEZE the standout and worthy favourite at the time of writing. His form behind Banbridge looks solid and now in a handicap off a mark of 133 you can see why he is so popular in the betting. He likely has more to come at this trip and further and will go close.

My other bet in this race is FARCEUR DU LARGE who I think has plenty more to come over further but this race should be run to suit. He ran well behind Real Steal last time and is much better off at the weights and will run a big race here. Panda Boy rates the main danger after finishing not far behind Real Steel, the only thing that put me off him is he might need the full 3 miles to be at his best.

Leopardstown 3.10

This is a huge moment in the season for HONEYSUCKLE as she will be wanting to bounce back from that Fairyhouse disappointment where she tasted defeat for the very first time. In hindsight I don’t think it was anywhere near as bad as it seemed as the winner Teahupoo has won impressively since and is now favourite for the Stayers next month. She has made this race her own in recent years and if she is back to her best then they are all going to be up against it and I feel that even includes State Man.

State Man hasn’t looked back winning 5 in a row over hurdles now. He did the Cheltenham/ Punchestown double last season and has returned with two very convincing wins. He will clearly go well so it should be a fascinating clash. Vauban was an eye-catcher behind the latter last time and it will be interesting to see if he can reverse that form. I have a feeling they will be a lot closer together this time around. The rest just don’t look good enough and will struggle to lay up in the closing stages.

Leopardstown 3.40

Willie Mullins has won 9 of the last 10 runnings of this race and you would be surprised if he doesn’t win another with FACILE VEGA in this. He is 6 from 6 and never really been out of his comfort zone. There are some good horses in here but based on all known form he makes it 7/7 before going onto the Supreme at Cheltenham.

High Definition is really interesting, he was classy on the flat and won nicely on debut over course and distance. They skipped plenty of hurdles that day so it really suited so it will be nice to see what he is capable of here with the form of his last race working out really well.
