Haydock 1.30
There may be 14 runners in here but it doesn’t look as competitive as usual with BUBBLE DUBI looking like the one to beat. He has plenty of experience to his name from maiden and novice events including a good second behind Tahmuras on hurdles debut. He then stepped into handicaps for the first time winning really nicely. He is up just 5lb for that and likely has more to come off 117.
Too Friendly is the main danger back down in trip after a few average runs over further. This looks ideal for him despite giving the selection 7lb. Of the rest Whizz Kid and Big Boy Bobby could outrun their odds on their best form.
Even at the time of writing CAPTAIN WINTERS continues to drift but I can still see him going close. This colt by Lope De Vega was below par when last seen but prior to that ran well behind Naval Power and won at Thirsk. He has first-time cheekpieces here and I’m expecting him to improve again so while an opening mark of 94 is no given I certainly wouldn’t think it’s out of reach.
Dumfries was well backed when opening his account at Southwell last time and will be the danger if improving again. Finn’s Charm is a big horse and he could have more to come but does have a bit to prove given how he finished last season.
Musselburgh 2.25
I have been waiting for AUTUMN FESTIVAL to make his comeback after a winter break as he was improving with every run when last seen. He put together 5 wins in a row by small margins which means he doesn’t shoot up the handicap and makes his return off just 3lb higher. If fit enough to run to that level he will be the one to beat.
Gweedore catches the eye under the talented Billy Loughnane and will be the danger to Autumn Festival again after finishing third behind him last time and is slightly better off at the weights. He is always thereabouts and should go well. Of the runners with fitness on their side The Gatekeeper looks best of the rest.
Haydock 2.40
I am confident the one to beat here is MUCHO MAS with form figures this season of 2211. He bumped into Arizona Cardinal and Bill Baxter before winning at Lingfield and then back from a break followed up at Sandown. He is unexposed as a stayer and while this is tougher I think he can keep improving for a while yet so gets the vote.
Jeffery’s Cross is lightly raced after just 7 starts but has knocked on the door over fences and if improving could be the danger. Enqarde stays all day and is another one that needs to be respeted.
Musselburgh 3.00
In a really wide open race it is worth taking a chance on CATCH CUNNINGHAM at an each way price off a really nice weight. His form is solid in 5 furlong handicaps and with no clear standout horses in the race he should make the low weight count. He goes well fresh and the yard have had an early winner as well so I expect a big run from him.
Makanah carries a lot of weight but is likely the main danger with solid runs off 101 in very good handicaps. He goes well off a break and as a previous course and distance winner is a threat to all. Of the rest Came From The Dark and Vintage Clarets could well have a say at the business end.
Haydock 3.15
I have had my eye on FARMER’S GAMBLE for a while and it was good to see him win so impressively at Exeter last time. He won by 14 lengths so a 9lb rise looks to be fully warranted. He has more to come and I think he Ould follow up here despite this being a much tougher race.
Hyland was an excellent second to Emitom at Newbury last time and if building on that could be the danger. The Changing Man ran well behind Apple Rock and Itchy Feet and certainly wasn’t disgraced at Cheltenham so also enters calculations.
Musselburgh 3.35
This doesn’t look like a vintage renewal and I would expect SPIRIT MIXER to prove tough to beat. His form in top class handicaps last season was impressive with a close second behind Trueshan and a big run in the bet365 trophy at Newmarket. Andrew Balding has started the season well and he will likely be ready for this valuable handicap.
Good Show is very interesting with a lot more likely to come from Keith Dalgleish’s gelding. If he has improved again from 3 to 4 he will be right in the mix. Wise Eagle and Emiyn look to be the best of the rest if running to the best of their form.
