Punchestown 3.40
A 25 runner handicap to start the card on Day 2 of the Punchestown Festival. There is one that has caught my eye for a trainer that has a good record in this race. Jessie Harrington’s MIGHTY MO MISSOURI comes into this off a nice weight and has a similar profile to her last winner. He has been running well at two miles with three seconds in his last four runs and will likely improve for the step up to this trip. Her last winner did exactly the same and I think he will run a massive race.
The main dangers could well be La Malmason for Gavin Cromwell who looks like a potential big improver on handicap debut. He has some good form in his first three runs and I expect him to go well here. Tony Martin is always respected in handicaps and Unanswered looks ready to land one of these big races so keep an eye on the market.
I am keen to chance the unexposed THREE CARD BRAG resuming his progress at Punchestown on Wednesday. That neck defeat to Inthepocket looks much stronger form now and he was impressive at Fairyhouse winning by 12 lengths. He could only finish fifth in the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham last month but the trip probably just stretched him at this stage of his career. Back down to 2 and a half here should prove ideal and he remains a horse with considerable potential. He is said to have come out the race well and with further improvement on the cards he should go very well here.
Sandor Clegane is favourite at the time of writing and did finish in front of the selection at Cheltenham but he wouldn’t be a certainty to confirm those placings back in trip. Senior Chief skipped Cheltenham but arrives on a hat-trick and is also feared.
Punchestown 4.45
This is quite an open race with 2 or 3 in with good chances with the vote eventually going to IMAGINE who ran a cracker at the Cheltenham Festival. He will likely be a player in Grade 2 and 3s next season and I expect him to go close here if in the same form as when last seen. He has progressed with every run and it makes him the one to beat.
Grangeclare West was on my radar at the start of the season before falling short at the top level. This is a much easier race and he rates the main danger. Of the rest I am going to keep an eye on Port Stanley for a yard who have done really well in this race and he is interesting back over hurdles.
Punchestown 5.20
Stablemate Impaire Et Passe looks something out of the ordinary so for GAELIC WARRIOR to finish second to him in the Ballymore at Cheltenham last month was a good effort. He had won 3 times prior to that and should be open to further improvement stepping up in trip again. I think if he stays he is easily the most likely winner so definitely worth chancing.
Affordale Fury was a very good second to Stay Away Fay in the Albert Bartlett and if those excursions haven’t taken their toll then he will be the danger. He might just be doing his best work late when the selection has already flown though.
Punchestown 5.55
The Gold Cup rematch as Bravemansgame is allowed to run after being sold. That said he will need to find plenty to beat classy Gold Cup winner GALOPIN DES CHAMPS. That Gold Cup win was one of the best I have seen for a long time, the way he travelled into the lead and went away. He will likely be way too good again here as you would expect at the prices.
Bravemansgame would have probably won 8 of the last 10 Gold Cups on his performance last time but the selection is just too good and will likely have to settle for second again. Hewick was running a decent race in the Gold Cup before coming down and could well chase the chief protagonists home.
Punchestown 6.30
I was so impressed with A DREAM TO SHARE at Cheltenham last month and I think he can remain unbeaten here before an exciting season over hurdles lies in wait next year. He is a perfect 4-4 and cut through the pack last time staying on strongly up the hill. He looks to have the perfect blend of speed and stamina and if fresh and well for this should comfortably justify favouritism.
The only other unbeaten horse in the field Tullyhill looks the danger. He impressed at Gowran last month and is open to any amount of improvement so is expected to give the selection most to think about. It’s For Me was behind the selection last month but still could have more to come so is also noted.
Punchestown 7.05
A small field for this valuable handicap which is a shame but it is still setup to be a good race. I very much see it between Ha D’or and ILIKEDWAYURTHINKIN who both have nice weights considering their form. He clearly been brought along with this in mind with his first run coming in December before being hampered and brought down on his next start. He ran a cracker at Leopardstown to finish third last month and that should leave him spot on for this.
Ha D’or is making his handicap debut after he was well beaten at the top level behind El Fabiolo at Cheltenham. He has good form at Grade 3 level and is likely better than a mark of 140 and rates a danger to all of these. Last year’s winner Royal Rendezvous is 5lb better off but might not be as good this year at the age of 11. Lieutenant Command may prove best of the rest.
Punchestown 7.45
Willie Mullins has won 3 of the past 6 renewals with Augusta Kate, Colreevy and Grangee so usually targets a decent mare at it and FUN FUN FUN fits the bill. She ran away from her rivals to win impressively at the DRF back in February before finding the Champion Bumper too hot at Cheltenham last month. If she has come out that race okay she remains open to improvement and should get back on track.
Stablemate Junta Marvel might be the one to give her most to think about having looked an impressive sort winning on debut at Limerick last month. The market should prove informative there. Of the rest Fancy Girl is also respected so it could easily be a 1-2-3 for the stable like we saw in one of the handicaps yesterday.
