Sandown 1.05
Under Control quickly bounced back from that Cheltenham flop to win gamely at that venue 9 days ago. She is looking progressive now and could go well but I’d worry this is coming soon enough and she finds herself at the top of the betting so might be worth taking on. KILLALOAN seems to have had a better prep for Paul Nicholls. He has improved with every race and was nicely on top at Ludlow last time. This is tougher again but he can keep improving and looks sure to run well.
Of the rest a stablemate to the selection Beau Balko could threaten. He won easily at this track back in February and then only went down a head at Stratford last time and should have more to come after just a handful of starts. Iberico Lord edged out the latter last time so must also have a chance on that form.
With the ground likely to come up softer for this race after a deluge of rain on Thursday I think it opens this race up. I am going to have a small bet on CAPTAIN GUINNESS against the market principles. He ran a cracker at Cheltenham on soft ground behind Energumene who has won again since. He made a few mistakes that day and could be better at Sandown. At the prices he looks good value.
Jonbon steps out of novice company for the first time and we will see what he is really made of. His only defeat this season came against the classy El Fabiolo but I still don’t fully trust him here especially if it comes up really soft. Greaneteen romped home in this race last season but will need it to dry up pretty quick to be as impressive this year.
Sandown 2.15
Kitty’s Light will undoubtedly be popular here following his Scottish Grand National triumph but that was just last week and this is a big ask to follow up in a race as tough as this. He was only third off a 5lb higher mark 12 months ago so is likely up against it. I prefer REVELS HILL who remains unexposed over this trip. He was a big eye-catcher flashing home for second behind Your Darling at Ascot earlier in the season and was only beaten a length up to a marathon trip last time. He has more to come and could be the answer here off a 3lb higher mark.
The Goffer was pulled up in the Irish National last time but his win at Leopardstown prior to that was impressive and his fourth to Corach Rambler in the Ultima looks really strong form. Of the rest Annsam has won 2 of his last 3 and will likely be in there pitching for a long way but might just find a stronger stayer too good in the closing stages.
Sandown 2.50
It is very interesting that HEWICK skipped a few entries at Punchestown to come over for this and he must have a great chance. He is clear of the field on ratings after running a cracker in the Gold Cup before falling. He travelled well but got tired late on so the drop in trip should really suit if it comes up testing. For a horse that cost £850 he could be landing his owners a nice pot here.
Paul Nicholls has dominated this race in recent years and has kept Solo fresh for it. He really took a step forward on his last run but would need a similar one to win this on softer ground. Eldorado Allen has the form to be competitive but has been on the go plenty already this season so might be a race too far for him.
Leicester 3.05
This looks a good opportunity on paper for Frankel colt AL MUBHIR to resume his progress. He was progressive as a 3yo and then ran a pleasing race beaten 4 lengths into fifth in the Lincoln on reappearance. He is sure to strip fitter from that and off the same mark will likely prove really tough to beat here.
Bopedro was right back to his best winning at Newmarket last time and is a bit player despite the 6lb rise as the front pair were clear. At a bigger price Aerion Power is still quite lightly raced and might be capable of a bigger performance on reappearance having won fresh before.
Sandown 3.25
In an open race an each way play at a big price seems the way to go. MUMBO JUMBO has been running well in handicaps and looks overpriced here. He ran a cracker to finish third over course and distance behind Solo last year. The soft ground won’t be an issue with some of his best form on the softer side so he could run a massive race.
Paul Nicholls has a couple of good chances in Cap Du Mathan and Quel Destin who I fancied at Aintree before not running. They are both live dangers along with Hudson De Grugy who won over course and distance last month.
Haydock 3.45
I was pleasantly surprised to see BOARDMAN as big as 15/2 for this as I thought he’d be much shorter. It is competitive but he won this race last year and he shaped better than the bare result when only midfield in the Lincoln last time. He will be fit now and despite being 8lb higher in the handicap than last year he could still have a big performance in him.
Gweedore impressed winning easily at Musselburgh but he does go particularly well at that track and will find this tougher up 6lb. Biggles form of 1113112 is extremely hard to knock and he is another one that should be involved despite being off a career-high mark now.
ITV Racing Lucky 15
With a Super Saturday ahead and no less than 7 races live on ITV Racing I’ve taken four of my strongest bets to make a Lucky 15. If we can land 3/4 winners we would make some decent profit. Pays 400/1!
