Newcastle (AW) 12.20

A competitive opener on ITV Racing and I do have to say I’m quite surprised to see Raatea as short as he is at the moment. He reacted well to cheekpieces to win at Haydock but only prevailed by a neck and is up 3lb. They might not have the same effect and on the balance of his form looks opposable. I prefer LETHAL LEVI at an each way price. He is still just a 4yo and he ran a cracker denied just a neck by Bielsa at York before failing to make an impact at Royal Ascot. If bouncing back on AW debut could surprise a few.

If the favourite does disappoint Batal Dubai might be a greater danger as he is still unexposed and wasn’t beaten far on reappearance so could come on for that. Oisin Murphy has also been booked so he will likely run a big race and could fight it out with the selection here.

Lethal Levi 11/2 each way

Newmarket (July) 12.40

This looks like a decent renewal with plenty of nice prospects in here but STAR OF MYSTERY is a standout for me. She made her debut behind Carla’s Way who was well fancied at Royal Ascot last week. She was really keen that day and was still learning on her last run despite winning by 11 lengths at Haydock. She could be better again here with the level of her form good enough already to take this, she is the one they all have to beat.

What A Question is the main danger as she won nicely at Goodwood last month and was expected to do so judging by her being backed into favourtism. I don’t think the race was as strong as the selections form though and a few others might make the frame including Indispensable and Point Of Attack.

I have been waiting to see BRAD THE BRIEF again and while things didn’t go to plan on Champions Day his two wins at Haydock and the Curragh prior to that are very good form. He beat Glen Shiel and then Mooneista who are both solid yardsticks. He remains lightly raced for a 6yo and likely represents decent value here.

Tiber Flow is a horse I had on my radar for much of last season but it didn’t really pay to follow him and I think he could be opposable as favourite for this. He has the sort of profile where he is often overbet and that could be the case again in this. Spycatcher won impressively at Thirsk on reappearance and then ran a cracker when fourth in the Victoria Cup so no surprise if he puts up the most resistance.

Newmarket (July) 1.15

It is interesting to see NEW LONDON start his season here in a race connections won last season with a horse on its first outing of the season. This will likely be his starting point before stepping up into Group races as he showed he is more than capable of competing at the top level with a second in the St Leger last season. If anywhere near his best form he should take some beating.

He is a strong selection but it is by no means a penalty kick with Al Aasy good enough to challenge him at his best but is hard to catch right. Kemari and Phantom Flight have a bit to find on ratings but the latter has fitness on his side so could outrun his odds.

New London 11/10

Newcastle (AW) 1.30

A word of warning before I get stuck into this preview. My selection APPIER has been a big drifter this morning now out to 8/1 (from 9/2) so while I still fancy him to run well that is just worth noting. He won nicely when backed into favouritism here back in May and then ran creditably at Newmarket before getting back in the winners enclosure at Lingfield last time. He has to carry a penalty but is clearly thriving and even with the drift I’m keen to play him each way against this field as competitive as it is.

Blow Your Horn completed the hat-trick at Pontefract last month and even with a 7lb penalty could run well again. Hadrianus has a fair bit of scope and if he bounces back now switched back on the AW he could run better than his price suggests on handicap debut. Mostly Sunny and Citizen General also enter calculations in a good race.

Appier 8/1 each way

Newmarket (July) 1.50

A small but select field for the Criterion Stakes this year and it is good to see Pogo lining up to try and defend his crown. He is an admirable horse but he struggled on return behind Triple Time at Royal Ascot last week and will need to bounce back in a big way to take this. I prefer the improving ALDAARY for Shadwell. This son of Territories completed a hat-trick of wins impressively at Haydock over a year ago and given he won fresh a couple of years ago fitness shouldn’t be an issue.

He could still be open to further improvement and will likely be very difficult to beat. Jumby won in good style at Haydock when last seen and isn’t entirely out of this either but on the balance probably needs more.

Newcastle (AW) 2.05

Golden Rules has been the big market mover for the race this year with his owner really talking up his chances after that Kempton victory. Oisin Murphy is on again and he will run well but 9/2 in a race like this has to be passed over. I really do think OMNISCIENT is going to run big for Sir Mark Prescott. I think they have always had this race marked down for him and he was an impressive winner at Southwell when last seen back in October. Put away since a mark of 95 may well underestimate his ability especially stepped up to this marathon trip. He looks a knocking each way bet as I can’t have him out the frame and I do think he’ll go close.

Zoffee ran well behind Ahorsewithnoname at Royal Ascot and must enter calculations. He was also denied just a neck by Metier before that so is form stacks up. He should run well and will likely be backed. Adjuvant is another one on the up and he should be staying on strongly too. Post Impressionist is a horse I thought had a ton of potential but he doesn’t always apply himself.
