Goodwood 1.50
This is a set to be the biggest field for this race in over 10 years with 18 lining up. I have had two bets in this with the main one being PERFUSE who looked a star in the making before a below par effort at Ascot last time. He drops back down to this trip and with the softer ground I fully expect him to bounce back to form. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a Group horse down the line.
At a bigger price COVERDALE just keeps improving with 4 wins in a row with his last one looking like he has more to offer. He handles any ground and I think he will run a massive race at a double figure price. Garden Route will likely improved for the step up to this trip and if handling the softer ground is the main danger.
The complexion of this race has changed hugely since I first started looking at it with key players Unquestionable and now Jasour both out due to the ground. I respect Sketch but I think it might be hard to make all and that could leave the door open for VANDEEK. This colt made quite a taking start winning on debut at Nottingham despite having somewhat fallen out the stalls.
He travelled up strongly and was nicely in control at the finish. He is obviously open to improvement and while this is tougher he could be a nice prospect in the making. I do still think Sketch is the danger but Bobsleigh would have an each way chance as he didn’t shape badly behind Relief Rally at Newbury and still has potential after just the 4 starts.
Goodwood 3.00
This looks like a Group 3 in name only as it has plenty of horses that are capable of running at a higher level. ESPIONAGE edges it for me after a nice win at Roscommon on his comeback run. He is expected to be even better at these longer trips and considering he was a close second at Group 1 level as a 2 year old I think he is the one to beat.
Artistic Star is the likely danger back on a softer surface and in an easier race. He has ran with credit in better races but this will be more up his street. Of the rest Chesspiece and Desert Hero could be in the mix for places especially if this race doesn’t come too soon for the former.
Goodwood 3.35
French Guineas winner BLUE ROSE CEN makes the trip over to Goodwood for a fascinating renewal of the Nassau Stakes. She has won 7 of her last 8 starts now and was impressive up to this sort of trip staying on strongly to take the French Oaks back in June. She’ll love the ground and looks the one to beat.
Nashwa bounced back to win the Falmouth by 5 lengths last month and looks the obvious danger if running to that sort of level again. Al Husn actually beat the latter at Newcastle and is on a hat-trick so is also feared.
Goodwood 4.10
This doesn’t look a good race on paper and even though I’m not always that keen to see a horse run so soon in a big race GRAY’S INN looks the form pick. She is only 3lb higher than her handicap win last month at Chester. That was followed up by a nice run in a Listed race at Sandown last week. If that race hasn’t taken its toll on her she has to be the one to beat.
This race lacks depth bar a big improver and Mission To Moon might prove the main danger. Of the other runners Lincoln Legacy and Gamraan could prove best of the rest.
Goodwood 4.45
Isle Of Jura is 2-2 in handicaps and has won eased down on both occasions so he’d have to be feared in his hat-trick bid but he is short enough in the betting. I think there is value to be had in backing SEA EAGLE for William Haggas. We have only seen him 3 times and on his final start he stayed on strongly to win easily by 3 lengths at Chelmsford. He still looked to be learning on the job on that occasion so given plenty of time since and gelded he could be an even better proposition now sent handicapping.
I thought he’d be shorter than 8/1 so no surprise to see him strong in the betting in the run up to the race. Roarin’ Success also deserves a mention as she is on a hat-trick and kept finding more to prevail at Ascot last time and her limit might not have been reached yet as that form is working out well too.
Goodwood 5.20
Not a race to go big on with not that much known about quite a few of these with plenty of them open to a lot of improvement. GET JIGGY WITH IT caught the eye on debut finishing second at Newmarket when running so green. You would expect her to be a lot better for that run and if stepping forward she will go well with Frankie Dettori booked.
Shadan Joy has gone so close to winning with two close seconds and rates the main danger. Ornellaia is the only horse in here with group entries and if improving for this longer trip could be set to run a big race again.
Goodwood 5.55
This looks a good opportunity for HOLKHAM BAY to open his account. He is the least exposed in the field and now handicapping off a mark of 80 could easily improve again. He should enjoy the drop back to the minimum and the soft ground and is hard to get away from in a race lacking strength in depth.
Estate has been progressing well but he finds himself in a tough race now so will likely need to improve again. Of the rest Jm Jungle won last time but a 5lb rise will likely find him out.
