Newbury 1.50
The favourite often does well in this race with Hukum and Zechariah winning the last two renewals at odds of 8/11 and 6/4. KEMARI looks set to go off the jolly this time around and this son of Dubawi may well prove tough to beat. He failed to fire on return but was back to his best winning readily at Newmarket last month and that is pretty decent form with New London back in third and Al Aasy tailed off. Buick gets the leg up and he has a favourites chance.
Arrest was impressive on reappearance winning the Chester Vase but blew out in the Derby and then didn’t fare much better behind King Of Steel last time. He has a bit to prove but if bouncing back could still be the danger. Klondike is unexposed and is another one to note if improving.
I’m keen on CELTIC CHAMPION here as he impressed me winning at Lingfield when last seen. He remains unexposed and put away since off a mark of just 87 I’m struggling to see how he doesn’t go close. That visual impression was backed up by the clock last time and some of his form stacks up.
Given the nature of the race I’m going to have an each way saver on SILVER SAMURAI at around 14/1. He is coming back down the weights and dropped a further 3lb if things drop better he could build on that last run and go close. Divine Libra and Strike also made the shortlist and are feared most.
Newbury 2.25
The market shows how wide open this is with just 11-runners the bookies are still 6/1 the field. HARRY BROWN looks a good each way bet back down to his last winning handicap mark. He is also dropped in grade after running with credit in much better races. He looks solid on his previous form and I would expect him to be shorter nearer the off.
Libra Tiger with form figures of 2221 in his last 4 races rates the main danger stepping up in grade. He is only 5lb higher than his win and could still be improving. Swift Asset could be best of the rest with a win and two seconds in his last 3 runs.
Ripon 2.40
Another tricky race and I’ve backed two at double-figure odds against the field. My main play is going to be ROUNDHAY PARK as I know he hasn’t been at his best the last twice but that win at York came from somewhat out the blue and if bouncing back off just a 2lb higher mark here may well surprise a few. He seems to have pace around him so could get a good toe in and looks a nice price to play in such a tough race.
The other one I like is STRONG JOHNSON who is coming down the weights. He was only 5 lengths behind Soul Seeker at York and that form has already been well advertised since. He is down another 2lb and should get competitive at around 14/1. Tons of dangers probably headed by Mark’s Choice but he’ll need it to all drop right.
Newbury 3.00
In a hot race CLASSIC looks a good each way price based on his last run. He really caught the eye the way he stayed on late at Sandown to win nicely. Novus who finished second has since franked the form with a win and a second since. He has only been raised 2lb for that win and I think he can go close again.
Scholarship could still have plenty to come if the blinkers have the desired effect as he was very keen last time and is now back down to just 1lb higher than his las winning mark. Of the rest Open Mind looks capable of more and will be fighting out the finish.
Ripon 3.15
Summerghand is proven in these big handicaps and has to be feared but he has been installed as favourite and I prefer LAKOTA BLUE at juicier odds. This Sioux Nation colt was beaten less than a length by Jm Jungle at Goodwood last time and a repeat of that sort of form would see him bang there in this. He is only 2lb higher and looks sure to go well.
Monsieur Kodi was back to his best winning at Goodwood last time. That has already been franked with Capote’s Dream winning next time out. Lots of others to mention including Sophia’s Starlight who is a decent yardstick and also Dream For Gold who should acquit himself well again.
Newbury 3.35
It is good to see last years winner Jumby back to defend his crown but I think CHINDIT will reverse the form this year. He is 3lb better off compared to last years running and on his best form this season he rates the one to beat. Pat Dobbs will likely ride him further forward than he did last year and he should go well.
Jumby is obviously the main danger with very good form at Group 3 level this season and there is no reason he doesn’t go close. Pogo is interesting on his best form but is hard to catch right. Witch Hunter could be a tad overpriced if he has more to come.
