York 1.50
In what is a really open race I think INTRINSIC BOND is a solid each way bet based on his recent form. He has won and finished second in his last two starts in good handicaps. He isn’t raised for his last run and with Oisin Murphy booked I expect a big run from him again.
Last years winning Bergerac returns here of the same mark but looks way short of that level currently. Jm Jungle is improving all the time and could prove the main danger for a trainer that always does well at York. Of the rest Manila Scouse should be in the mix based on his best runs at this level.
I don’t think there is a lot between this field and the eye is drawn to COGITATE following that impressive debut win at Newbury. He is a good looking son of Churchill and the way he hit the line the last day I think there is plenty of improvement to come. He stayed on strongly in the closing stages and I think it’ll take a good one to beat him.
Obviously Ballymount Boy has some eye-catching form having won at Hamilton and then only gone down a length to Vandeek in the Richmond. That horse has won the Prix Morny in France since so he is entitled to be favourite and will definitely be a danger. Edwardian and Loose Cannon are also armed with potential in a good race.
York 3.00
We may only have 5 runners but this is set to be an interesting race. The issue is we might not have a lot of pace on with no obvious leader in the field. If Gregory has to try and make all I think he could be opposable under a penalty at a short price and CONTINUOUS would be my pick here. He ran his best race so far when stepped up in trip at Royal Ascot. That looked a very good run with a second behind King Of Steel and he will go close here if in the same form.
Gregory stays further so that’s why I think he will make the running and whilst that will make it tougher along with a penalty and drop back in trip he is still a danger to all as he is clearly talented winning his first 3 starts. Castle Way could prove best of the rest as he has been fairly lightly raced this year.
York 3.35
I have been with PADDINGTON since he won the Irish Guineas and he hasn’t let us down winning at Royal Ascot before taking the Coral Eclipse and then the Sussex Stakes last time. He has answered every call so far and if a long season doesn’t catch up with him he will likely add another Group 1 success to his already glittering CV. The way he shaped last time he will love going back up in trip and it is hard to see any chinks in his armour.
Mostahdaf was impressive slamming Luxembourg 4 lengths at Royal Ascot last time with some very talented horses trailing in behind but he hasn’t always backed up performances like that in the past and that is the worry. He also gives away 7lb to the younger legs and that could prove telling. Nashwa and The Foxes are both talented in their own right but both need more on recent form.
York 4.10
This doesn’t look as deep as past renewals with half the field needing to prove they stay. I have followed ROBERT JOHNSON for most of the season and I think he has at least one more handicap in him. He won 3 in a row before flying home for second at Glorious Goodwood. He has been raised 4lb for that and is back down to 2 miles where he most recently won over course and distance. It shows how good he is that most of his wins have worked out so well and I think he is still the one to beat here.
Aztec Empire is the main danger after a good run behind the talented Sweet William last time out and looks handicapped to go well off this mark again. Lower down the weights Gordon Elliott sends over Tronador who was third behind the selection last time and I expect him to go well getting weight from most of the field.
York 4.45
I’m keen to look away from the top of the market here with both Pinafore and Designer looking opposable. I know KIMNGRACE has been running below par recently but her sole run over C&D resulted in an impressive win and now just 4lb above that mark she might surprise a few here. She’ll obviously need to leave that Chepstow run behind last time but she looked outpaced and could never land a blow. This might pan out better with plenty of pace on.
Plenty of dangers potentially headed by Pillow Talk who also goes well here. She won a Listed race here as a 2yo and then back here chased home the progressive Great State on reappearance. She was back to form beaten less than a length into third at Pontefract last month and off what should be a decent mark can run well.
York 5.20
A really wide open race to cap off the card at York and I have had two bets in here. STARLUST catches the eye with Ryan Moore teaming up with the in-form Ralph Beckett. He won 2 of his 3 starts before going handicapping and went a close second on handicap debut at Glorious Goodwood. He was raised 3lb for that but still looks to have plenty more to offer with form of his runs working out well and is the one to beat here.
The bulk of the pace looks to be low so ZABRISKIE POINT looks a solid bet with plenty of improvement to come on handicap debut. He won on his first run before just losing out in novice company under a penalty and could once again be flying home late here. Blue Point could be best of the rest after a really nice course and distance win last time and at a massive price Barnwell Boy may bounce back now up in trip again.
