It is still early days for the well bred STARLORE and the drop back to 6f could easily see him improve again. He won on debut at Sandown and then just raced too keenly the only fourth at that venue last time. He is a lot better than that and if bouncing back could easily be the one to beat.
There should be a lot of pace on from the likes of Esquire and Almarada Prince and if Kingscote keeps him covered up he should be able to pick them off in the closing stages. Purosangue has finished runner-up the last 3 times and was only beaten a length at Ayr last time so looks the danger. Serried Ranks is another one progressing with experience and he could also get involved if suited by the trip again.
Expensive Dubawi colt Ancient Wisdom won his first two starts but looked a little flat albeit behind Rosallion at Ascot when last seen. He has been given plenty of time since and is open to improvement but I do think he is short enough in the betting. I prefer the chances of PER CONTRA for Ollie Sangster. This colt is a perfect 2-2 and he was subject to a big gamble before winning on debut. He hung under pressure but that looked more greenness than anything and Spencer always looked confident suggesting they think a fair bit of him.
He hung again when wining by nearly 5 lengths at Ffos Las but it didn’t stop him galloping forward and he won on the bridle. He will need to improve but he is still rough around the edges and I want to keep him on side. Of the rest Arabic Legend ties in with Arabian Crown and likely won’t be far away either.
Newmarket 2.00
Unbeaten colt CITY OF TROY is looking to make it a perfect 3-3 here and despite Aidan O’Brien having concerns over the testing ground I think he will take a lot of beating. He was so impressive winning the Superlative when last seen and with further improvement to come should go in again.
Iberian had Rosallion behind when winning the Champagne Stakes and I also rate the runner-up Sunway so that looks strong form and he will be the biggest danger. Alyanaabi is also on the up but he is in deep enough waters here.
York 2.25
This is arguably the toughest race of the day but I do like MONTASSIB at a price. He was back to winning ways at Newmarket back in May and caught the eye running on strongly behind Significantly in the Ayr Gold Cup last time. He was beaten just a length and a quarter and if building on that could be a danger to all in here and seems to have gone under the radar as well.
Significantly is only up 4lb so will likely be bang there again. Pendleton won on debut for this yard at Thirsk last month and up 5lb this past course winner should get involved as well.
Newmarket 2.40
I’m surprised GRAND PROVIDENCE is as big as 11/1 for this. She is by Nathaniel so is bred to keep improving with age and experience and did just that to score over this trip last month. She only had to be kept up to her work late to beat Sheishybrid and I know that rival is 7lb better off but I’d be fairly confident she can confirm those placings despite that swing. She will be suited by this scenario and looks great each way value.
Pied Piper has been trained for this and wasn’t disgraced when third at Killarney on return back in August. He will be fitter now and with Moore booked should prove popular. The Shunter is also interesting along with Vino Victrix but the latter wouldn’t want it too testing.
York 3.05
Not a great deal to go on here with only 4 of the 9 runners with form in the book. Align The Stars sets the standard of those but I’m going to take a chance on newcomer ASSAILANT to win on debut. He is very well bred being a half-brother to several winners including Chartreuse and Gloria Mundi. Like always in these types of races the market will be interesting but he definitely catches the eye on paper.
Of the rest Saxon Warrior colt Love Warrior is a nice type for Charlie Johnston and he could run well first time out as well. Time Test colt Colorada Dancer was only beaten 2 lengths into fourth in a race that is working out well at Ayr so also enters the reckoning.
Newmarket 3.15
With 2 wins from 3 starts and the promise of more to come now ARABIAN CROWN looks the one to beat. He has improved with every run and was impressive at Salisbury last time. That form looks solid and if he progresses again he looks capable of landing the hat-trick.
Gasper De Lemos left his debut run behind to win head in chest at the Curragh last month and looks an obvious threat. Dambuster and Meribella both won on debut and are hard to rule out as well in a good renewal of the Zetland Stakes.
York 3.35
It’s a shame Believe In Stars is a non runner as I think he would have taken a lot of beating but with him out now LA YAKEL looks hard to oppose. He was back in the winners enclosure staying on strongly to score at Doncaster last month and up just 4lb in ground we now know he handles he is the one to beat again.
Scampi is a strong stayer and could be the danger as long as he doesn’t get too outpaced.
Newmarket 3.50
A good race to close out and I think SILVER SWORD has been overlooked here. He has already won 3 times this season and looked good beating Catch The Paddy at York back in August. That was a tough ask behind Chindit at Sandown and he was given a lot to do having been a bit reluctant to load. He is better than what he showed there and with this track likely to suit better he could easily get involved.
Knight was edged out by Chindit at Sandown and still looks on the up so is definitely a danger. Real Gain also stayed on in the style of a nice horse last time and should get competitive as well.
