I’m surprised WINGED MESSENGER is as big as 7/1 for this. He improved with every run as a 2yo and ended the season on a high winning at Hamilton. He was a big eye-catcher on reappearance going down just a length and with the step back up to 6f ideal he should be going close in this.
Old Chums has been really consistent and only missed a short head last month so if in that form again will be involved back on turf. Stash The Cash bolted up at Catterick but an 8lb rise is a bit harsh and this is definitely a better race too.
The market is usually a good indicator in the Lily Agnes so keep a close eye on the betting but NIGHT IN PARIS should have a big shout. She missed just a short head on debut at Ripon and she looks a fast filly. This faster ground could see her hard to catch and from a wide draw if she hits the ground running under Spencer she could take some pegging back.
Plenty of dangers likely headed by Lady Lightning who impressed winning on debut. She is open to improvement now switched to turf and should go well. At a bigger price I’m interested to see how Flicka’s Girl gets on as she ran poorly last time but was impressive on debut and might bounce back.
Chester 2.05
Main danger Lady Lightning and watch out for Flicka’s Girl as well
Chester 2.35
Quite a few in with chances here but VINCE L’AMOUR looks a good bet to complete the hat-trick. He bolted up at Ripon on penultimate start and the runner-up Mr Irrelevant has franked that form winning twice since. He then followed up with plenty in hand at Catterick last month and with this tight track likely to suit he may well prove good enough to defy an 8lb rise. This is his toughest task to date but he is a horse on the upgrade so I’m keen to keep him on side.
Kings Merchant impressed winning at Wolverhampton and will be the danger if proving just as effective on turf. Due For Luck is also worth a second look despite losing his way towards the end of last season.
Chester 2.35
Main danger Kings Merchant and also look out for Due For Luck
Chester 3.05
There are always some nice fillies that line up for the Cheshire Oaks but I still don’t think we’ve seen the best of BEELEY and at a double-figure price I’m willing to chance her again. She has looked far from the finished article on both starts and looked to get run down by a very nice prospect (and stablemate) in Siyola at Sandown last time. I think she’ll love this tight track and with more to come up in trip she can give us a decent run for our money.
Obviously there could be one or two high-class prospects in here so they are feared. Joseph O’Brien saddles Galileo Dame won well well at Leopardstown and will likely go off favourite. Aidan O’Brien has Port Fairy who should also have lots more to come up to this sort of trip.
Chester 3.05
Main danger Galileo Dame but look out for a big run from Port Fairy too
Chester 3.40
Aidan O’Brien has won 2 of the last 4 renewals of the Chester Vase so usually targets a good one at it and unexposed colt GROSVENOR SQUARE fits the bill this time around. He stayed on strongly to win impressively at Leopardstown on final start and is only going to improve again going up to a mile and a half for the first time.
Hidden Law impressed bolting up at Newbury and looks the most obvious danger.
Chester 4.10
Aidan O’Brien is beginning to hit some form so GALLANTLY could prove hard to beat in this. He shaped like a horse that needed the outing when runner-up on reappearance at Leopardstown and on what is just his fourth start he must have a great chance with the step up to a mile and a quarter for the first time sure to suit. He is a good looking type who should keep improving as he gains experience.
Castle In The Sand has finished runner-up on all of his last 4 starts now so a bit concerning but still looks the likely danger.
Chester 4.45
A tricky handicap to close out Day 1 but ON A SESSION should acquit himself well. He has come back down the weights and was finally back to some decent form beaten just a couple of lengths at Musselburgh last month. He has bene left off the same mark and if building on that again should hit the frame at the least.
Divine Libra finished down the field at Newbury on reappearance but was only beaten a couple of lengths and with that behind him he could improve but he’ll need luck from stall 12. Legal Reform won at Lingfield and likes to go forward so he is another one in with a good shout.
Newmarket 4.45
Main danger Divine Libra and at bigger odds Legal Reform can run well
