Wetherby 1.15
The lightly raced CHOOSETHENEWS could take a bit of beating in the ITV Racing opener from Wetherby. This son of Westerner ran well fresh last season bumping into Giovinco at Newcastle. He progressed to win at Newcastle and then bumped into Playful Saint on final start. He should have more to come off this mark and looks the one to beat.
In terms of a danger Tedley impressed winning on chase debut at Uttoxeter a fortnight ago and as long as this doesn’t come too soon I think he could be the danger. William Cody lacks a run but is another one to note as well.
Ascot 1.30
The more I look at this race the more I feel LEADER IN THE PARK is one of the best bets of the day. He was an expensive purchase and looked promising over hurdles last season winning easily when well backed at Doncaster. He wasn’t disgraced on final start at Cheltenham and retains a lot of potential now sent over fences here. He should make a perfect start.
Bhaloo also went the right way over hurdles and could have more to offer now chasing. Bad lost his way over hurdles but now over fences is another one in with a squeak but the fav should take a lot of stopping.
Wetherby 1.50
Hard to see how LUCCIA doesn’t make a winning return here. She ran a huge race to finish third behind State Man and Irish Point in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, clear from the rest. She wasn’t disgraced in fourth behind Impaire Et Passe at Aintree too. She goes well fresh and back down into Listed company should scoot up against these.
Sweet Fantasy has won both starts over hurdles and has potential but does look up against it to beat the fav. Take No Chances is back in trip which might go against her but with that Chepstow run under her belt she could be the danger.
Ascot 2.05
It is never easy carrying 12 stone but MASTER CHEWY is the class act in this field and I do expect him to get the job done. He fell in the Arkle when still going quite well and then was back to form going down only narrowly to Found A Fifty at Aintree on final start. The ground will suit him here and if he gets into a nice rhythm he should be hard to beat.
Saint Segal is certainly capable and did shape quite well following a wind op at Chepstow so looks the danger. Irish raider Uncle Phil pulled up at Punchestown but with the hood back on might be able to bounce back here and get involved.
Wetherby 2.22
With both Thunder Rock and Dashel Drasher out this race has cut up. I already liked KATEIRA and now she looks one of the so-called ‘bankers’ of the day. She looked bordering on smart beating Jango Baie at Aintree on final start and has the potential to do better again over this trip. Dan Skelton sounded bullish about her chances earlier in the week and she should justify favouritism.
Sandor Clegane is back over hurdles but has something to prove and the ground is probably a concern too. That may leave Twig as the danger as he has a good record fresh and won his final start over hurdles.
Doncaster 2.40
I’m really looking forward to seeing GERRI COLOMBE back out. It was really encouraging to see him back up that tremendous run in the Gold Cup to win at Aintree on final start. He is still a horse with the potential to improve again this season despite being an 8yo and I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t make a winning return here. He beat Envoi Allen in this last year and I expect the same result again but possibly more convincingly this time.
Envoi Allen is a 10yo now but he acquitted himself well last year finishing second to Protektorat in the Ryanair before struggling a touch behind Jonbon at Aintree. He goes well fresh and should give his running hopefully behind the favourite.
Wetherby 2.58
With Grey Dawning pulled out due to the ground this looks a golden opportunity for BRAVEMANSGAME to get his head back in front. I think he is a better horse on better ground and following another wind op he should be hard to beat here. He probably would have won on return last year but for fluffing the last and I’m pleasantly surprised to see Even money on offer.
Conflated is plenty talented but unseated at Punchestown and I’m struggling to see him upsetting the favourite. He hasn’t won for 2 years and would need it all to fall his way. French Dynamite is also respected but this is a big ask.
Ascot 3.15
The market isn’t really giving FIRE FLYER much of a chance but at double-figures I’m happy to play. He lost his way towards the end of last season but he beat Secret Squirrel at Taunton and that horse is vying for favouritism for this so if bouncing back he could be massively overpriced. He is still lightly raced and could have more to come this season.
I do see Secret Squirrel as one of the main dangers. He bolted up at Taunton and then ran well to finish fifth at Sandown so on form has strong claims despite lacking a run (did win fresh last season). Fiercely Proud is another one expected to be involved.
Wetherby 3.32
I was impressed with GOBLET OF FIRE winning well at Southwell last month. He has gone up 6lb from that and this does look a better race but if he runs to that sort of level again then he should be bang there. Salsada should put good pace to the race and he might always be in the box seat to pounce under James Bowen who continues to impress in the saddle.
Williethebuilder was denied just a short head last time and with more to come is definitely a big threat to the selection. V Twelve also has a chance but would need to get back to his best.
Ascot 3.45
This will take a big performance off a big weight but CHIANTI CLASSICO is so likeable and took really well to fences last season. He won 3 of his first 4 in this sphere and was impressive taking the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival. He was below par at Aintree but has potential to do better again this season. The Grand National is the likeable aim but he goes well fresh and should have a big chance.
Highstakesplayer has won 4 of his last 5 and actually 6 of his last 8 so has a good strike rate and looks the obvious danger. Amirite stays well and is another one likely to be in there pitching in the closing stages.
