I’m confident SPRINGWELL BAY can make it 2-2 over fences here. He warmed to the task on chase debut at Chepstow but really impressed with the way he jumped the last two at pace and despite racing enthusiastically throughout still had enough to assert in the closing stages. The form has been franked with Boombawn winning the Rising Stars and this step up in trip promises to suit too so no surprise to see him a warm order.
Hyland impressed scoring readily over C&D last time but he needs to prove he can back that up now and this is a better race. He could still be the danger though as I’m not convinced Buddy One jumps well enough and Resplendent Grey might just get outclassed.
However you break this down JONBON is going to be hard to beat. I know he doesn’t love Cheltenham and he can make the odd horrendous error but in the main he is a high-class chaser and he thrashed Edwardstone in this last year. If he gets round safely then it is hard to see how he doesn’t win this and win it comfortably. He has a terrific record fresh so the lack of a run doesn’t bother me at all.
Edwardstone is a 10yo now but did bounce back from that fall in the Queen Mother to finish third behind Jonbon and El Fabiolo at Sandown. If he gives his running then he will finish second. The straight forecast pays around 11/8 which isn’t a bad bet at all.
There have been some classy types beaten in this before so it is not a confident bet but CONFLATED should get the job done. He shaped as though he’d improve for the run when fifth in the Charlie Hall behind The Real Whacker and if taking to this discipline then he is a danger to all. He finished third in Gold Cup a couple of years ago which is head and shoulders above what any of these have achieved.
Mister Coffey will appreciate the ground but he doesn’t find off the bridle and the hill will likely find him out. Busselton might be able to run on for second at is better value. Tommie Beau stays all day but again needs to prove he can take to this discipline.
Cheltenham 3.30
This is a straight shootout between Valgrand and POTTERS CHARM and I am all over the latter. He came up out of Sam Twiston-Davies’ hands at the last to win on hurdles debut at Worcester and then followed up impressively at this track last month. He looks an out and out stayer and still looked raw the last day so can improve again. He travels so well through his races if Valgrand is in sights swinging in I’m confident he’ll pick him up comfortably.
Valgrand does look promising having hacked up here last time but he needs to prove himself up to this trip in a race as good as this and might just be vulnerable in the closing stages. Gale Mahler was no match for Valgrand but is still best of the rest.
