Hard to look past L’EAU DU SUD here for Dan and Harry Skelton. This 6yo achieved a high level over hurdles and made a bright start over fences winning readily at Stratford. Bar one mistake he jumped well and with Lookaway likely to set it up for him I think he’ll come there strongly before hopefully doing enough in the closing stages.
Lookaway won a match at Uttoxeter and will need to improve to be a serious danger. If he goes too hard that might leave Petit Tonnerre to pick up the pieces for second as that close second to Imperial Saint was a very good run.
Favourites have a poor record in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and I’m keen to take on Ginny’s Destiny. He is a likeable horse but he needed the run last season and that may well prove the case again. I much prefer IMAGINE for Harry Derham. This horse is proven fresh and has been targeted for the race. He was an expensive purchase and he looks well handicapped.
Ga Law won this a couple of years ago and shaped well at Chepstow so looks the danger. At a huge price Straw Fan Jack might be one to play on the each way extra places as he could run on well when others have cried enough.
I really like DOYEN QUEST here for the Skeltons. This horse was progressive last season winning 3 times over hurdles and could have even more to come now stretching out in trip. He was second in the Silver Trophy on return and that race has worked out notably well since producing 5 subsequent winners since. He is unexposed and fits the profile needed to win this race.
Emailandy could be capable of better again this season and looks the danger. Gowel Road is pretty consistent and ran well when runner-up to The Wallpark here last month so also comes into it.
Newcastle 3.15
After just 7 starts the best could yet be to come with PEACE MAN and he looks good value against the favourite Dubai Honour. He ran well when third to Lead Artist and then was denied just a nose last time. He is more unexposed than most in here and is understandably getting backed in the betting as his chance looks an obvious one.
Dubai Honour will find this easier and is definitely a major player. Tyrrhenian Sea hasn’t been seen since way back in February and if ready to fire fresh is another one to note in an open renewal.
Cheltenham 3.30
It could be a big weekend for Dan and Harry Skelton and MAJOR FORTUNE looks one of their big hopes. He was progressive last season winning 5 in a row before going down just a nose at Ayr on final start. He reappeared over what looked an inadequate trip at Newton Abbot and drifted substantially in the betting as a result but still ran out an impressive winner. He has a touch of class about him so despite a further 9lb rise I still think he could have more to come.
Tony Martin has landed a gamble in this race before so Hamsiyann is definitely feared. Long Draw is another one who could pick up the pieces if they go too hard.
Newcastle 3.48
Dark Angel colt NIGHT RAIDER was back to his best winning readily at Kempton last month and with the promise of more to come again could prove up to this task. He has won 3 from 6 overall and is looking progressive now. He is a strong travelling horse who should bounce out and might always be in the box seat.
Annaf has the proven form in the book but was only midfield at Ascot last month and needs to get back to his best. Willem Twee is still lightly raced and is another one to note in a decent renewal.
