Cheltenham 1.50
The Paddy Power Gold Cup at the November meeting is usually a good pointer for this and MADARA ran an eye-catching race to finish fourth, never nearer. The fact he was sent off 16/1 for that probably tells you this has been the target all along and off a mark of just 140 he should be spot on for this. There is a lot of pace on too so it could pan out perfectly.
Gemirande impressed bolting up at Ascot and would be dangerous off the front but should get taken on. That could leave both Ga Law and In Excelsis Deo as the two dangers.
Doncaster 2.05
I thought that was a really encouraging run from GABORIOT in the Grand Sefton on return. He was beaten just over 4 lengths and the winner King Turgeon franked the form winning here yesterday. He should be spot on now and while he would probably appreciate a slightly softer surface the ground should be fine as it is and he is the one to beat.
Kim Bailey has won 2 of the last 3 renewals and Does He Know could run well. He finished a good fourth behind Senior Chief here on reappearance and wasn’t disgraced again last time. Chasing Fire is also worth noting and could get competitive too.
Cheltenham 2.25
A tricky race to work out but I am convinced Libberty Hunter wants softer ground. He lacks a run too so might be opposable. MASTER CHEWY is the class act in the field and despite falling on 2 of his last 4 starts I’m going to chance him. He fell in the Tingle Creek last time but in these calmer waters could come good again. His form from last season is decent and I am expecting a big run.
It is not just a two-horse race though as Issar D’airy would be dangerous off the front in cheekpieces. Triple Trade is another one that likes it here and could get competitive if bringing his best form.
Doncaster 2.40
I know WEST BALBOA has been heavily beaten the last twice over fences but back over hurdles here I can see him bouncing back and proving too good for these. On his best form he is obviously a cut above so it is no surprise to see him strong in the betting as I do think he’ll probably get the job done.
Gale Mahler bumped into Valgrand and then was behind that rival and Potters Charm here last month. She needs to bounce back to her best but shouldn’t be completely ignored and is probably the danger.
Cheltenham 3.00
A fascinating race as Skyjack Hijack comes here in search of a famous seven-timer. His jumping will take him a long way but this is the toughest opposition he would have faced and I feel it might be one step too far especially on the new course here. I much prefer CLONDAW GENERAL at a bigger price. He won at Worcester despite looking raw and I can see him coming on plenty from that. He’ll be staying on strongly up the hill and is worth chancing against the fav.
Of the rest Western Knight is a nice prospect too showing good battling qualities to win at Ascot. He has more to come and might even emerge as the danger if the fav fails to give his running.
Doncaster 3.15
I have been waiting to see ALTOBELLI back out again and he should make a winning return here. He goes particularly well fresh and bumped into Knickerbockerglory last year which now looks strong form. He is still unexposed and a mark of just 130 should prove lenient this season with the potential for more to come.
Deploy To Spy impressed winning at Aintree despite being a negative in the betting. He can be in the mix here if improving again. Norman Fletcher impressed at Huntingdon and is another one to note.
Cheltenham 3.35
A half-sister to Champion Hurdle winner Epatante I’ll be surprised if JOYEUSE doesn’t win this. She showed a good attitude to prevail at Taunton at the start of the year and that form has worked out particularly well. She was an excellent third at Ascot on return and that form involving Celtic Dino and Wade Out is particularly strong. She has more to come and looks thrown in off a mark of 119 with the step up in trip also likely to suit.
Take No Chances impressed on penultimate start but wasn’t so good last time. The yard won this race last year so she could go well. Georgi Girl is another one likely to get involved.
