Hopefully we can kick off Boxing Day on ITV Racing with a winner and I’m keen to side with the progressive ASTA LA PASTA for Dan and Harry Skelton. He ran well behind Booster Bob on chase debut and then improved to hack up at Carlisle which turned into a match. He travelled strongly before finishing third behind Kalif Du Berlais at Newbury and this step back up in trip should see him back in the winners enclosure.
It is obviously a competitive race though so a few dangers. Range probably heads them winning well at Chepstow last month and with more to come should make a race of it. Fire Flyer is also likely to travel into it but is a bit suspect off the bridle.
Aintree 1.05
This is easily one of the best races of the day now and I can’t wait to see POTTERS CHARM out again. He hacked up at Cheltenham last month to remain unbeaten under Rules and despite dropping back in trip here there is a lot of pace on so I can see it panning out to suit him as he will be staying on strongly at the finish. They think a lot of him and I wouldn’t want to oppose with his form stacking up.
Celtic Dino has impressed but he will face competition for the lead and that might just make him vulnerable in the closing stages. Similar comments apply to Roadlesstravelled who is a nice prospect but will want the lead. Country Mile is the danger as he’ll be held up too.
Kempton 1.20
I was really impressed with THE JUKEBOX MAN at Newbury. He made a winning start over fences in a good race and looked a natural once he warmed up. He should tighten up and improve plenty for that outing and has found a good opportunity to make it a perfect 2-2 in this sphere. I don’t think he has to lead so if something goes too fast he will get into his rhythm and could also be in the box seat.
Hyland has won his last two at Cheltenham and showed a good attitude to fend off Resplendent Grey last time. This is tougher though and I think he’ll need to find more. Masaccio chased home the selection last time and looks the one to give him most to think about again.
Wetherby 1.35
A really competitive renewal of the Rowland Meyrick now and I’m going to chance SOME SCOPE coming good again for Richard Hobson. He is still lightly raced for his age and shaped well following a wind op when fourth behind Frero Banbou at Newcastle last month. He is down another 1lb and Callum Pritchard is superb value for his 7lb claim and gets the ride. He’ll be ridden cold and might be good enough to pick them up.
Cruz Control is off a career-high mark again but shouldn’t be underestimated. He is better than what he showed on reappearance but freshened up should run well here. Tahmuras also has a point to prove after Haydock but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him bounce back.
Kempton 1.55
A race you will not want to miss! Constitution Hill returns for Nicky Henderson but he has a lot to prove following a bout of colic. He hasn’t looked the same horse in a couple of gallops we’ve seen and hasn’t run for 366 days now. I think there is enough there to oppose and LOSSIEMOUTH has looked better than ever. She overcame a couple of sloppy jumps to win at Fairyhouse and she won’t be taking any prisoners.
Paul Townend is over for the ride and she will be the one hitting the line best and trying to exploit any weaknesses that may lie in Constitution Hill. If he is back at his best he’ll win but that is a BIG if and I’m not convinced. Can’t wait for this one!
Kempton 2.30
I always love the King George and this year I can’t get away from Irish raider SPILLANE’S TOWER for Jimmy Mangan. He has the best form on offer after splitting Fact To File and Gold Cup hero Galopin Des Champs in the John Durkan and should improve plenty for that run. He is a chaser on the up and this test should be ideal. Ideally the ground would be softer but good horses go on anything and I think it’ll be fine.
Grey Dawning is the danger but that Betfair Chase run would have taken a fair bit out of him. He looked the winner only to be reeled back in. If he comes forward he is a danger to all but a few nagging doubts. Banbridge will love the ground and is also feared.
