Newbury 1.50
I’m keen to chance THE FOUR SIXES in the ITV opener on Saturday! He appeals as being massively overpriced back over hurdles. He pulled up on chase debut behind Iberico Lord (same race Gidleigh Park pulled up in) but then improved at Wetherby. He seemed to have them all at it before belting one and unseating his rider. Back over hurdles he looks well handicapped and if he can improve again he is a danger to all.
Up For Parol impressed staying on strongly to win at Ffos Las and despite a 6lb rise should run well. Haiti Couleurs has relished going chasing so I’m not sure why they’ve come back over hurdles here.
Warwick 2.05
L’eau Du Sud is unbeaten over fences and he has been visually impressive but I’m not sure if he has actually beaten much looking back and RUBAUD could be value to turn him over. The latter was rated higher over hurdles and while he fell behind Sir Gino and Ballyburn at Kempton if he bounces back under likely aggressive tactics he might just prove hard to reel in late on.
L’eau Du Sud needs to win this if he has any Arkle aspirations. He is still the obvious danger as both Tedley (who is likeable) and Riskintheground just have too much to find to get involved.
Newbury 2.25
Venetia Williams is flying right now operating at a 30% strike rate in the past fortnight alone and I can see DJELO bouncing back here. He bolted up in the Peterborough Chase before running a bit flat at Windsor last month. If back to his best he would have a major shout in this. He was impressive at this track last season so he clearly likes it here and I’m surprised he isn’t favourite over Bravemansgame.
Le Patron probably isn’t the most straightforward but he is more unexposed than most in this so could emerge as the danger. He impressed winning here on reappearance and has been freshened up since Cheltenham.
Warwick 2.40
This looks a straight shootout in the betting but to be honest I think it’s just a one-horse race with GALA MARCEAU. Her best form is a cut above these and we know she goes well fresh. Danny Mullins has come over for the ride and I’ll be surprised if she is beaten as she just looks the class act. They’ll be looking to win this before heading to the Cheltenham Festival next month.
West Balboa is also talented but she can over-race and wouldn’t want to be keen against a class animal like the Mullins horse. She still looks the one to chase her home in second.
Newbury 3.00
It is such a shame Sir Gino has been ruled out as I was looking forward to seeing him again. As a result it has blown this wide open and I’ve decided to chance LIBBERTY HUNTER who I feel will be massively suited by how this race is going to be run. Matata will go hard off the front and there is a chance Edwardstone takes him on too. The selection can sit pretty throughout before looking to reel them in late.
I do respect Matata and he is probably just about the danger over the old boy Edwardstone. I actually wouldn’t rule out Jpr One running a big race as well even more so if he is ridden off the pace with the hope they’ll go too quick.
Newbury 3.00
Main danger Matata but look out for Jpr One despite being the rank outsider
Warwick 3.15
I thought that was a good run from LE MILOS to finish third behind Lowry’s Bar at Chepstow just after Christmas. He has been dropped another 2lb and looks off an attractive mark now competing in a veterans event. There is a nice pot up for grabs and the Skelton’s have probably targeted this with him. He is more lightly raced than most and certainly looks capable.
Shakem Up’arry fell at Cheltenham on reappearance but has been given time since and it would be no surprise to see him bounce back in a race of this nature. Grandads Cottage is another one that could get involved if bouncing back.
Newbury 3.35
I can’t help but feel Joyeuse has been overbet for this. I can see NAVAJO INDY reversing that Windsor form with Secret Squirrel. He took a bit of time to warm up that day and at one stage got detached 5 lengths out the back and probably about 15 lengths off the lead. He came back into it strongly but got caught outwide and was nearest finish. Cheekpieces should help him focus better early on and despite the drift I remain confident.
Fiercely Proud impressed winning at Ascot and he beat Kabral Du Mathan that day who obviously ties in with the Windsor form. A repeat of that would likely see him bang there and he is quite an attractive each way price.
