Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Tips
How can you not love Gold Cup Day? Even more so with Galopin Des Champs going for 3 Gold Cups! He will go down as one of the all time greats if he manages to win this afternoon so we’ll certainly be roaring him home. Racing needs great horses to get behind and he certainly is one. The Triumph is always a good watch and it is a mouthwatering race in prospect again this year. Couple that with the Albert Bartlett and we have a really exciting afternoon ahead.
I can’t wait for the Triumph mainly because I’m so against East India Dock. I just don’t think we have seen him out his comfort zone yet and I’m not convinced he is as good as people think. LULAMBA brings untapped potential to the table and I can see him winning this well. He has scope to go on improving for a long time yet and he could be a name we will be hearing about for years to come. I know the yard think a great deal of him and his Ascot win still looked quite raw so fancy him to step forward plenty.
Hello Neighbour impressed at DRF but would need everything to drop right again to go close. At a bigger price Gibbs Island has impressed but obviously this is a big step up on what he has achieved so far. I do think he’ll be suited if they go hard though so might be worth a place bet at a nice price.
I loved the way LARK IN THE MORNIN travelled en route to winning the Boodles here last year. He has only been seen twice since and ran well when fifth at Haydock on final start last season and then shaped as though he’d come on for the run when only seventh on reappearance at Leopardstown. He should be spot on for this now and looks handicapped to go close.
VALGRAND ticks plenty of the trends and you just know Dan Skelton will have him primed for this. He has that course form and has the potential to do better again so despite fluffing his lines in recent starts certainly don’t rule out a big run. Dangers likely headed by Absurde who won the race last year and has been lightly raced since. Kargese is favourite but she needs to settle and at a short price I’d take her on.
It is hard to look past DINOBLUE here. I know she is yet to win around Cheltenham but she ran a cracker in the Grand Annual at the Festival a couple of years ago and then found Limerick Lace narrowly too strong in this last year conceding first run. The ground is more to her liking this time around and despite carrying a Grade 1 penalty I expect her to be tough to beat.
Brides Hill bumped into Telepathique at Huntingdon last month and could threaten if building on that. She has beat Allegorie De Vassy before so I think she should be second fav as she looks the biggest danger to me. Limerick Lace takes her chance again but she’d need the ground to soften up plenty to defend her crown.
I’m still annoyed The Yellow Clay didn’t come here as I think he’d have won this readily. It should be a good chance for THE BIG WESTERNER to remain unbeaten now. She is 2-2 over hurdles and looked well suited by the step up in trip to win impressively at Limerick. She has untapped potential and if improving again will be a danger to all so I want to keep her on side.
At a bigger price I can see INTENSE APPROACH going well. He has won 4 of his last 5 so his form is progressive. He thrashed Gale Mahler at Musselburgh last month and could surprise a few in here. Lots of dangers as you’d expect in the Albert Bartlett and Wendigo could go well. He looks an out and out stayer so if they go too hard he will be staying on strongly. Jasmin De Vaux is also noted if jumping better.
I really hope GALOPIN DES CHAMPS wins and makes it a famous 3 Gold Cups. It hasn’t been done since Best Mate back in 2004 and I think this horse is every bit as good as him. He has everything you want in a staying chaser and has arguably looked better than ever this season. He poured it on in the closing stages at the Dublin Racing Festival and if in the same form I don’t think they’ll lay a glove on him.
I know Banbridge is suited by the ground but I don’t think he’ll be in love with the extra distance and Cheltenham is a very different track to Kempton. Inothewayurthinkin has been supplemented and could be the one to chase him home as he is still unexposed. Monty’s Star is also likely to be in the mix so might be worth including for the forecast.
The Hunters Chase is always fiercely competitive and in truth any of 4 or 5 could win this. Angels Dawn is probably the most likely winner but is favourite so not much value in her price. I’m going to chance RYEHILL going close. He is lightly raced in comparison to most of these and absolutely dotted up at Naas last month pulling 12 lengths clear from Ontheropes who is a fair yardstick. He can improve again and I think this test will suit so a double-figure price seems too big.
It’s On The Line has the ability to win this but he often races lazily and hits flat spots so if you back him he will likely be a tough watch. Shearer is quite a big price as he has been progressing well and Paul Nicholls got on the board yesterday. Willitgoahead is quite interesting as well but will need to jump better.
The talking horse of the Festival takes his chance in the Martin Pipe KOPECK DE MEE will likely go off a warm price here. He had multiple entries but has opted for this and he could be thrown in off an opening mark of just 136. He looked impressive winning in France and was snapped up by JP McManus after. We saw him make a shrewd purchase earlier in the week with The New Lion and it could pay off again here. I expect him to be smuggled into the race and he could be a standout as the price is suggesting.
They’ll be plenty of places on offer so it might be worth having a saver. If you do Taponthego is interesting as his form from earlier in the season looked good and he was given a quiet time behind William Munny at Punchestown. He steps back up in trip and I think we’ll see a much better ride. Wodhooh beat Joyeuse so people have jumped to the conclusion she is well handicapped. She does look short enough now. East India Express is another one capable of rattling the frame.
